So I have taken off the inner roof and am about to bolt some holders for a roof platform. Shall I find a way to go trough the beams or shall I just bolt it trough the roof close to the beams? The platform will have a total of 6 fastening points with 2 M10 screws each (100x50mm foot)

I want to be sure it can hold some weight, 60L of diesel on occasion and some other bits and bobs.

Going through the beams would certainly make it stronger :thumb2

Get someone to hold it there while you look from a distance :nenau

Will do so! Then another thing I started to think about, the further away from the main side columns the weaker the construction. So it might be a plague or cholera decision!

if you could make some metal block to fit in the space between the beam and the roof you could set the brackets a little wider.

I wouldn't worry too much about the weight as the maximum you should be looking at putting up there is about 60kg for on road driving. The limitation is due to the pendulum effect and most noticable on corners.

That's probably true and I will usually not have that much weight on. But there will be some passages in Africa on my way to Gambia that I would like to carry some extra fuel. Don't want to brake the roof then. Will definitely drive with the weight in mind. Thanks for the advice!

60 litres of fuel will work out at 60Kg:augie

cant you carry the fuel in jerry cans mounted in lockable holders lower down on the sides or rear of the vehicle?

when we go to south africa we use a expedition trailer when we go camping.
its really the right thing to to if you need to carry large amounts of fuel/liquids/food/equipment.
food for thought eh

That's a bit overkill for me to be honest, I just want to get down to Gambia.

Re Trailer, it would be great if it had the same wheels and tyres as the tow car though...

That reminds me, I remember back in the 80's they used to sell adaptor hubs for caravans, to utilise the car's spare wheel...
What a mismatch that could be... I doubt that would be legal now.
Who remembers those, or even used one?:nenau
