Is there anyone with a roll cage, be it internal or external, that has been in a roll over - curious to know what damage occurred if any.

Having been in a "gentle" roll over in a mates Hilux and nearly rolling mine due to track collapse i thought it time to investigate some safety measures.

Some of the threads seem to get split opinions on what will work and what wont, especially when it comes to exterior cages and a 5 door.

cheers
Dave

Depends a lot on what sort of driving you will be doing, I have a cage made of 4 x 4 heavy box complete with a battery box built in for banger racing but this has to withstand a full barrel roll up a bank at 30 mph, if you are just of road and gently roll then some scaffold pols will be fine, Rick

:eek:4 inch box is some serious steel.

most of the tracks i drive are narrow and lots of bush rash on the paint, so generally driving slowly.
A good majority of the tracks are on the side of hills, so if you roll off the track you're down a hill and into some trees.
I am not so sure if i am trying to achieve a cage that means my truck is recoverable ( my expectation is a full cage would do that??) or just to focus on the safety of me and the winch man ( possible an interior hoop type)

Have a search for some posts by MadMark he did an external cage on a 5 door

This video is quite old & it is a Suzuki not a Nissan but principle still applies, cage was made from cds tube main hoop is welded directly to the chassis & front hoop has spreader plates welded to it and bolted to the bulkhead.

Vehicle was recovered & returned home by rac it got off quite lightly the engine mounts broke & most of the damage was done by the engine thrashing about so it was soon back out off roading.
