Following the check list about my oil leak I got from here I traced it to the rocker cover gasket I think.

Oil is running down both sides of the bell housing & the rear of the head has oil on it too.:(

I tightened the screws, a bit, if anything the leak is a bit worse, about a 6" square patch overnight.

I have a gasket on order, is there anything to look out for, the only major thing in the way is the ali pipe from the turbo to the intake, rubber tubes with clips each side, so should come off OK.

I plan to check & if required adjust the tappets, anything to watch out for there.

This is my first turbo diesel so I am a bit twitchy, most of my life [don't ask how long] I have had petrol engines, so I guess it is much the same.

Some time ago it was mentioned that drain/fill plugs tend to be a bit tight, BIT, it took a 24" stud buster & all my 80Kg to loosen two, gear & transfer box fill plugs, luckily I am on good terms with local garage with spare lift so I could get underneath:clap

Ive got oil in the same place. i have intercooler off for another issue and can see oil on the block but not on the cylinder head. hoping it is rocker gasket and not head.let me know what you find.

I rebuilt an TD27 engine a few months back and used a new rocker gasket, but when the engine was running it still bloody leaked at the back over the bell housing.I would be tempted to smear a thin film of blue hylomar under the gasket when you fit it to the rocker cover and on the face of the gasket when you fit to the engine................I did this and it is now leak free.

when you do the tappets test a few first with a thin feeler and push the valve down if you get a round impression on the feeler, then you will not be able to use feelers to set them next best way is turn screw till just nipped valve then back it off I think it was quarter turn, but it could have been half, so that you will have to find out by using the feelers on one that does not produce the round impression, Rick

My 2.7TD has started to leak oil at the back of the rocker cover. What is the best price for a gasket ?

Gasket

I have not had a price yet, I think he mumbled something like £20 but will update you when I get it

I will also use the stuff mentioned above

gasket

My gasket has come in Motex just rung me £15 quid I think he said

The garage created a similar leak, oil running down the back of the engine, when they adjusted the tappets. :doh

They had lost a couple of the rubber grommets that fit with the bolts.

Replaced and leak sorted.

Make sure there is a black steel band that goes around the perimeter of the rocker box cover, the band has holes that the fixing bolts go through, if this is not there then the cover will get distorted and you will never seal it.

I re-did my tappets a few weeks back and they didn't need adjusting, and I am still on the original rocker box gasket and no leaks.

that oil leak again

I have jet washed the top of the engine & wiped away all traces of oil at rear of Cylinder head below rocker cover. No more oil in that area but there is still oil dripping off bell housing. I do not seem to be losing oil from engine,

During recent gearbox oil change I found the oil was up to the level plug

The level in the power steering reservoir is a bit low, I do not recall ever checking it. Could this be the oil I am leaking???

I am colour blind BUT the oil dripping does seem black, where abouts is the power steering box? could that be the sourse of the leak.

Hopefully the answer is here :bow:bow

The power steering box is just under the battery, the only way it can be from here is if it is being blown back along the chassis/engine sump etc, Rick

If it is engine oil and only appears at the bottom of the bell housing, with no tracks from above, then it could be the oil seal at the back of the engine that leads to the clutch.

power steering fluid leak outhg to be distinctly red.....

agreed but by the time it gets to the rear of the engine it can be hard to tell what colour it started out as, put it between two bits of glass helps, but unless the engine is cleaned all over it will be hard to tell where it is coming from, Rick

Cheers guys, I found the steering box, no leaks, but there is some tell tale signs on the rubber hoses leading from the reservoir, I will trace them tomorrow if the rain lets up. Thanks

Someone motioned something about fluid & water having a different reaction to oil & water, I cant find it anywhere, I will put a container under the mav after I use it next & conduct a test, even take the container to someone who is NOT colour blind.:doh:doh

probably me about brake fluid which mixes with water, some auto transmission fluids also partly mix with water they go milky, which helps to make it harder to find where the leak is, Rick

Solved at last

It is the rocker cover, the rag to catch the leak did the trick.

Now the hard bit, fitting the new gasket.

If when I check the rockers I find they are a bit concave will a dial gauge with the probe on the adjuster screw give me a good enough reading

Thanks for all your input:bow:bow:bow

not necessary turn screw till it just touches then back off quarter or half turn, cannot remember which but if you can find one rocker that has not dished then try that with feelers you will soon know if it is quarter or half, Rick
