Ride Height/Torsion Bar adjustment

Been underneath on another job and thought I'd check the ride height. I've taken the measurement as per the manual and its comig out at 37mm where the manual says it should be 32mm, now my truck is definitely not set above std and almost certaintly needs raising a small amount as when stood alongside other vehicles you can see its alittle nose down.

The steering stops on the lower wishbones from which one of the measurements are taken appear to be different from those in the manual. Mine extend below the wishbone the ones in the diagrams do not, can someone have a look at their truck to see what theirs are like?

some of the earlier mavericks had a higher ride hieght. The hub carrier was slightly taller i parked next to one at a show and it sat about 2" above mine i thought that he had wound the suspension up but when i looked underneath the lower suspension arm was in the middle of the bump stops.

Can anyone help with the above? If not could someone measure from the centre of the front hub straight up to both the wheel are trim and also the top of the wing (as that is more fixed than the trim), so I can work out how far off I am?

just measured mine: from centre of hub to bottom of arch 50cm
from floor to bottom of wing 83cm (15inch wheels)

Thanks for that Dino. Mines not on level ground at the moment but I did both sides and one is 47 and the other 48 so I guess I'm about 2½cm (or 1 inch) too low which is about what I guessed but I wanted a baseline to work from.

Hi, just measured my centre to wheel arch, only 45cms, I looked underneath and the lower wishbones are nearly horizontal, with a gap of only 10mm on the lower bump stops.
I have had the vehicle from new, 11 years ago, and I have never adjusted them.
Now I know why I have difficulty getting under the vehicle, I thought I was putting weight on, now I know its the suspension. Those bathroom scales must be wrong too. :lol:

Can the adjustment to the ride height be made while the vehicle is on the ground, or is it best to take some weight off the suspension by jacking up the chassis a little.. ?

Hey I joined this site to help solve problems, however it has made me more cautious to check those other things on the vehicle, I do intend to keep this vehicle a long time yet to come. Nice to know that there are solutions to ALL of the problems so far

Hi just made some suspension adjustments, the Mav passed the MOT yesterday, so I thought I would leave well alone until now ... just in case.

I made some notes during the adjustments that may help you guys.

Tools you will need.
19mm open ended spanner,
a ring spanner 19mm ( I used a 3/4 AF spanner... perfect),
a 19mm socket and long bar.
Procedure.
use open ended spanner on lower nut and slacken top nut.
Tighten the bolt. I found it easier to tighten the bolt at the bottom rather than the nut.
Tighten the lock nut after the procedure.
You can do this while the vehicle is on the ground.
If you count the flats turned while tightening I found the following..
24 flats ( 4 complete turns of the bolt) raises the vehicle approx 19-20mm
at the front.
I still have to raise it a bit more but I'll see how she handles.
Also need to adjust headlights.

Just put my truck bak up to standard and WOW what a difference. It went up by 35-40mm and looks so different especially combined with the new MTs I've also fitted.

if you run out of adjustment is it simply a case removing the bars enough to move them round one notch, refit and adjust again?

Hi Cosmic, yes the same procedure.
The suspension does get lazy over time and you don't even notice it.
You don't even need to jack the vehicle up. However it is always a good idea to place an axle stand under the side you are working on, you never know if something may break, after all you are working on the suspension.

just been reading this thread with great interest as my t2 seems to be a bit low on ride height compared to some t2 I've seen on the road so I've checked mine and its coming out at 27and1/2 inch from road to bottom of arch fitted on 235/70/15 tyres just wondered if this is standard as i don't know the standard settings
don't want to sound a bit thick but is the torsion bar the long round rod from the front to the center of the car ?
also as any one out there taken any pics showing which bolts you adjust as i don't want to start altering the wrong ones I've done a search but can only seem to find text instructions

It' best to measure the relevant bits of suspension against each other as per the nissan manual to check the ride height, different brands of the same size tyres are different sizes so its impossible to measure from the ground up.

Someone with the same year truck as yours could give you the measurement from the centre of the wheel to the top of the arch but its best done off the suspension members. Its in the manual and yes the torsion bars are the long ones running backwards. At the end of them on the inboard side pointing upwards are some long bolts, its these that you need to adjust. The picture in the manual makes it obvious which one you need.

Just done this to ours.. 8O 2 inches lower than it should have been.
