I still have a problem with my rev counter dropping to nil intermittantly, engines runs as normal. My car ticks over at 750 rpm as most posts on here say is correct. if I rev slightly the rev counter returns to normal.

Just had a look in the manuals for idle speed and it says the revs should be 750 for non A/C and 900 with A/C so looks like I might have found the cause of my problem.

Read how to adjust but has anyone done it and how easy is it ?

If the engines running as normal and its just the indicator ie the rev counter that drops it a problem with the gauge or sender. Dont start adjusting tickover whatever you do

I cant remember the different brands of instruments but theres one (as fitted to my old 02 T2) thats renowned for dodgy rev counters and mine had the problem intermittently :thumb2

dont get started on adjusting tick over, nobody knows how to do lol i think it also depends of if you have a fly by wire engine or not. For example, me, I dont know what engine I have, but for the life in me I cant find how to adjust engine tick over, the manual doesnt tell you HOW to do it, just to do it if its low/high.

I have to say, i'm very surprised its so difficult with these trucks for soemthing so simple...

May I add to this by saying that before tampering with any idling speed, can I suggest that you check all air intakes and breather pipes as remeber that its the air intake that NEEDS to be correct before you adjust either the pedal or idling mechanisms, also ask your self when was the last time you changed the air filter and cleaned out all the relevant equipment, it may be that you are drawing in air thro a split pipe or even a kinked pipe.on modern motor cars if the diagnostics are checked due to idling problems 9 out of 10 times it points to air intake issues that must be checked.just to add insult check the mass air mechanism and maybe clean with a cotton bud and meths, and then theres the mini fuel filter that if blocked or holding heavy deposits could mean the pump is purgeing and dropping the revs on the counter, personally I would do all these first and then seek further advice if all the above fails, hopefully it will be something small like one of the above and if you think about it knowing that your motor has 140k on the clock ask yourself this question "if the idling needed to be higher or adjusted then why did it take 140k to notice this issue" hope this helps.

Car had a full service end of last year so filters etc all ok. Air sensor is on my to do list first and as far as I know the TDI engine doesn't have a mini filter.

The engine does run fine BUT the tick over is a bit slow , looked today and it is nearer 700 and has on occasion cut out if on full lock at tick over.

It can be adjusted at the pedal but the manual says under the bonnet but had no time today to look.

Think your going about it the right way as for sure to adjust the idling speed via the pedal from what I gather can be a right bit*h to do and get right, I still think its something else associated with idling thats why I said about air intake, as for the mini filter can only comment on the td version cause when I did mine it made a terrific difference and you wouldnt believe the crap that was in there, although thinking, has the tdi got diaganostic facilities ???? as it may be worth getting to know a friendly mechanic and checking that a fault hasnt occured, as you will know that until it is cleared from the system whatever you do really, the ecu will just keep reading the fault... just a thought. watching with interest
