On the odd occasion when the engine has stalled (eg when pulling away in too high a gear with perhaps insufficient revs), I found that I can't restart the car unless I turn the key back to the OFF position and then start afresh.

I'm not sure if this is to be expected, but thought it was worth asking here. One of the previous owners installed a switch for the actual engaging of the started motor......

Sounds like a faulty ignition switch barrel.
These can just be changed as it's only the contact block, at the back that causes the problem.

If it is a faulty ignition switch barrel, would you expect me to be having problems when starting normally (it always starts first time)?

My Maverick did this and so does my Terrano

It's the immobilizer kicking in isn't it?

Thats how they work isnt it, the odd occasion that ive stalled that's how mine has behaved.

this is as it should be, the idea is it prevents you from engaging the starter when the engine is running, not good for starter or ring gear, Rick

Thanks for all the comments - seems there is no problem then :)

Most modern vehicles are like this.

I agree with most who have posted it's been a design feature in more modern vehicles probably began with the advent of pre-engaged starter motors and modern ECU's.

my 98 will crank immediately after a stall but wont fire until you turn the key off fully and back on again...pre NATS / immobiliser model though.

Mine cranks and starts without having to put it in the off position.

there have been many methods of preventing the engagement of the starter when the engine is already running, and goes back way beyond ECU stuff, the simplest was the ignition switch that had a mechanical device that latched once the start position was used and when released would not allow you to turn to start again without turning right back, this was not popular as some hard to start motors required excessive key switch operation, another method was to disable the starter once the engine was charging, I am sure there were more but memory and all that, Rick
