I need advice, oh Wise ones!
Need to replace the rear shock absorbers on my 97 SWB. Springs seem to be OK still.

Now, do I need spring compressors to be able to replace the shock absorbers? Is there anything particular to watch out for, or a special way to go about changing them? And last but not least: where to get swb ones? Milners?

All info is welcome!

just take old shocks off then put new on. Don't have to mess with any springs etc

Easy job buddy

It's 2 bolts, just spray them up good before you attempt to remove them otherwise you'll have a game and may have to get the angle grinder out :doh

What you replacing with? Anything sexy?

Haven't bought any new ones yet. Nothing sexy in any case, budget is more important than looks now :)
It seems at least one of the current shocks is completely shot, they have been on there for 18 years. Front ones are still ok, have been replaced a few years ago I think. Branded KYB.

actually something I deem worthy of mentioning at the risk of loosing man points here,

The shocks came with a wrapping on them (compressed)

make sure you attach the first bolt at the top, then take the wrapping off and let is slowly come down (pushing against it), if you take the wrapping off first as I did youll have one hell of a good time trying to compress the shocks by hand... (still doable but fiddily)

make it easy for yourself and set it up first. :thumb2

Good tip!! Let me know if ever you are in Belgium, this is worth a few beers :)

:lol :thumbs

It is acheivalbe still but much harder work.

When you decompress the shock and it begins to move down make sure you push against it so you have plenty of time to line it up th the bottom thread.

If you get lucky youll do it on the first time, if not youll have to lie on your back and push up hard! :lol

Have to say guys my HD shocks had no sprung force to them at all and moved in and out with a bit of grunt (came fully compressed in the box with no ties on them).

Shocks are usually only there to dampen the loads on the suspension, it's the springs that keep things "up" :nenau

Bur Alex's shocks were sexy ones if I remember, standard only have a slight gas pressure if at all, Rick
