I seem to have a bit of "clunk" when moving gears, and I feel some play in the rear propshaft.

Time to change the uni-joints. But, should I do rear propshaft only, or also the front one? As far as I understand, front only rotates when in 4x4, so far less used.

Is this actually a task one can do at home, without any special tools?

Prop UJ's can be a pain but now I've done it a few times it's an easy job, just make sure you buy UJ's with a grease nipple and make sure that you have a decent set of internal circlip pliers to hand :thumb2

Front prop spinning is dependent on what hubs you have up front

I wouldn't be surprised if they are as bad as yours. Haven't been replaced since the car was produced - so 18 years old, and >290000kms.
The car always had auto hubs, I changed them to manual ones recently. Still, I do switch them to 4x2 when not offroading.

If your not running manual hubs it wont be spinning constantly so shouldn't be too bad

Good news then :). I'll add UJs to my upcoming order to Milners. Have to replace steering parts for Belgian MOT in June.

As yours is a MK2 the front prop won't be turning unless it's in 4WD so the fronts should be fine but could prob do with some fresh grease pumping into them:thumbs sounds as if the rears are past their best if they have play in them so would replace them as soon as you can but until then I would pump some more grease into them to try & ease the wear & play
