Replacing engine air filter

Hi all, sorry for asking this basic question. I wanted to make sure as I have never done this before. In order to replace engine air filter;

1. Release the latches of filter lid
2. Release the cable from the sensor
3. move the duct to make a space to take the filter out

Then replace the filter with new one, going backwards to complete. Is this correct way or was the lid supposed to be released from the duct before moving duct itself? Should the duct twist towards passenger side or front bumper side?

That is nearly correct...

After struggling, I now find it easier to release the large Jubilee clip from the air filter end of the hose, and remove the whole MAF sensor part out of the way...

The main reason for this is, there is a rubber one way "Duck Billed" valve in the bottom of the metal air filter casing, and while trying to get the filer back in via the tight gap left when the MAF is in place, it is very easy to damage this valve with the edge of the filter. They are pretty hard (and very expensive) to get replacement ones, and even if you just knock it out without damaging it, you have to remove the whole air filer casing to be able to recover it and put it back in place.

Thank you for your reply - Yes, MAF is one thing I'm concerned as I don't want to damage it in any way. I saw this (Navara) as an example and thought this is a similar way that you mentioned. I will have a look today again and try to take your way. Thank you again!:thumb2

The MAF is buried inside the housing, and pretty well protected from danger, as long as you don't go playing football with it once you have remove it, then it is quite safe to take out.

So I've completed - suppose this is just a basic thing for most of folks here but for me after a month of becoming a Terrano fan, it was good to start off with End of the rubber duct was quite tight (sticking to the plastic cover) to move even though I loosen the Jubilee clip, but it was easy once it start moving. It took sometime;

Loosen the large Jubilee clip (thanks Lazy-Ferret) and remove the end of duct from the plastic cover;

Opened the cover (finally);

New and old one (guess how long this has been used!);

Yuck... looks as bad as the one I replaced when we first got my wife's T2.

Now I would have said the Pollen filter was harder to replace than the air filter, so you are making great progress.... Just wait till you do an oil filter change... that's when the fun really starts..:lol

Changed pollen filter about 18 months ago.....yuck, fiddly but 'doable', fitted a K&N air filter this spring, LSD oil at same time as pollen filter.......haven’t worked up the courage for an oil change myself yet, but garage did it last year......:nenau

I disagree, a body lift makes the oil filter change a massive amount easier.

But even on non-lifted T2, oil filter change is no big deal. Take off the wheel at that side, fold back the rubber flap, and there you go.

It will spill a bit of oil, but not enough to make Mrs perelaar complain
Tip: fill the new filter with (new) oil before you screw it in. And dab some of it on the rubber seal.
