ive just spent the morning removing and cleaning the starter motor as im still having starting issues

just a tip if you want to do it, remove the bottom bolt first and then remove the top one. also, the use of a pit or ramps makes things easier, but i just jacked the o/s wishbone up a few inches so i could squeeze under the mav. you will need a fairly long extension bar for the bottom bolt because there isnt much room to swing a ratchet around. one last thing, the only way to get the starter out once its unbolted is upwards, which i must warn is a real pain: a combination of the intake manifold, brake servo and various cables make it tight, but it can be done with a bit of patience (and some swearing)

Or just take the wheel off and remove the rubber inner arch, then you can get directly at the starter motor and take it out of the side - much easier.

hummingbird you took the words right out of my mouth  i had to replace mine last month.

 wish i knew that earlier, would have saved my knuckles  thanks

I tried getting mine out that way and couldn't get it out as the brake pipes were in the way. :|

Easy enough getting it out the top  skint knuckles and all that

Me too think they just put twirls in the pipe too so you can't get owt thru,

How'd ya manage to do the back bolt (near solenoid) on/off i had to inch it with the spanner (wish i had 1 of them ratchet spanners)

I used ratched spanners for all the bolts and they were a bit of a pain.

Took me longer to refit mail cable due to the insulating cap, struggled to get nut on

cleaning starter motor

Hi,can anyone tell me,what i need to clean or how to?on the starter motor?

Is it the starter or the soleoid,as when i cant start 99 terrano i just tap starter with long metal rod while turning ign key and she instantly starts !!!

Not sure on stripping one as i've not done it for 18 years but from what you say it sounds like a sticky solinoid  but if thats playing up I would think there is a chance the motor maybe come to the end of it's life
