I've damaged the cable to my ABS sensor to the point that it's got to be replaced, my new one has turned up but I've read many a horror story in the past about removing the sensor from the hub and I really really really don't want to have to drill it out and I'm not leaving it in there and splicing any wires, the new sensor will be going in, in it's entirety!!!

So, for those of you unfortunate to have had to do this job in the past, firstly I beg that you tell me the best way to do this easily without any breakages and I secondly salute you for your bravery and commitment to the Terrano cause!!!

Discuss

doubtful you will get the old one out without it breaking.
Take the hub off and smack it out with a hammer:thumb2

I'm not taking that off again :lol Is it just plastic I'd be drilling out and is it easy to get out?

Is a non-op ABS an mot failure?

Ditch it. They never used to have 'em.

Not sure it's legal.

:nenau

I think the way VOSA see's it, is if it was there in the model list they use then it has to be there and work, Rick

I've got the replacment bit so deffo going to give it a crack :naughty

That's all you can do buddy. Even If it gives you grief, you'll still be able to drive it if needs be. :thumb2

point is when you drill it out even if you go off centre and make a big hole, it will not matter as the new sensor will be bolted in and will not move, I have yet to do one but the Mrs motor has one gone I think so will have to address the problem before Feb when her MOT is due, Rick

I'll post plenty pics of my progress Rick, btw sorting your mem sticks out tonight with Wales pics and vids, really sorry for the delay it's just been very busy

3mm drill bit, best to start drilling off to one side as theres a solid core/metal bit in the middle. Drill numerous holes all around the inner edge of the old sensor being carefull of the hub. Then use pointed pliers to pick it out, takes a while but saves you from going into the abs ring. If anything falls through just spin the hub a few times and it will drop out the bottom. Its really just loads of small copper wire. Good luck. Btw what sensor did you get??

So I tackled this job tonight, the good news was the Bosch replacment I have been delivered is exactly the same as the old one and even has the same Bosch numbers stamped on it :thumb2

I tried to remove the sensor in situe which was a mugs game so I decided off with the lot as I was replacing the lower ball joint as well. Upon removing the disc this dropped out.

I've decided the truck will stay off the road for a few days now so I can get some major work done on it without worrying about having it back togeher in time for work the next day so I'm using my bike/train get to work :thumb2

The ABS sensor did come out after some tactful tickling and some heat, vice was holding everything nice and steady for me :thumb2

I'll update everyone with my progress whn its all back together and I'll ensure it doesn't foul when fitting the new one

I'm no expert but I'm guessing that "pile" is supposed to be in one piece.

Is it your wheel bearing?

Blimey!

Great work Zac. To be fair these trucks are pretty straight forward when repairing/replacing things don't you think? Running issues are the worst for me but you guys and your experience take the worry out of that too:bow

Yep, wheel bearing has decided that it had other plans by the looks of it :doh

They are great to work on buddy :thumb2 There are a few horrible jobs on them, starter motor has to be least favourite, CKP Sensor was a beauty too

The access to the Oil Filter on the 2.7 is fantastic though :augie :augie :naughty

Better you find out now.

I had a Transit van that developed 5slight grumble in the wheel bearing. I did what we all do, "I'll wait until it gets a bit noisier". A couple a weeks later, only about 150 miles, it got noisier.

Instantly.

Very noisy.

I stop and discovered that the wheel bearing had collapsed. The front wheel was now at a slight angle. I managed to get home very slowly. Jacked the front wheel up and I could wobble the front wheel about 1/2 inch in any direction.

Best you find out now. If mine had gone at speed it could have wrecked the front hub and caused an accident.

that bearing is well F****d:eek:
i would be having a look at the other side as them big off set rims will root out and kill any worn part as you are finding out.

Zac that stub shaft is completely goosed, a new bearing will not be a good fit and will wear, I have loads with out the ABS drilling, not sure if I have one with, will look over the W/E, how on earth id you not notice that bearing when driving? Rick

Damn!!!! You know I was that focused on getting the ABS sensor out that I didn't even see the stub   A new bearing on there would be pointless, I didn't even see the scoring and grooves in it until I read your comment just and went back to check the pic :doh :doh :doh :doh

Urghhhhhh

The wheel bearing was fine, there was no play in the wheels and everything was tight, I just started to get a grumble and then a really nasty juddering through the wheel coupled with some very nasty high pitched noises now and again. Doesn't look as if the emery cloth is going to cut it this time although it did sort out my twin axle :thumb2
