Hi, can the airbag be removed as a diy job to replace the steering wheel?
Thr R reg mav Mav put us onto needs the s/wheel replacing as it as gone soft on the rim with standing in the sun for 2 years.

Thanx Paul.

I've never done a T2/Mav one before but you should be able to do it m8, 1st thing is to disconect the battery for at least 1/2 hour to discharge the system as air bags do have explosives in them. I think there are some little covers on the side of the steering wheel which you will have to remove or open to get to the air bag securing bolts once they are removed then the steering wheel center with air bag should come free but be carefull with it  if your going to fit a none air bag steering wheel then the warning light will show up & you would fail a MOT because of this, but if you remove the bulb from behind the clocks then it'll pass

Just been looking at it in the manual, it says this about it..

PRECAUTIONS

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR
BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”
(Dual Air Bag System)

The Supplemental Restraint System “Air Bag” and “Seat Belt Pre-tensioner”, used along with a seat belt, help
to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger in a frontal collision. The Supplemental
Restraint System consists of air bag modules (located in the center of the steering wheel and on the
instrument panel on the passenger side), seat belt pre-tensioners, a diagnosis sensor unit, warning lamp, wiring
harness and spiral cable.

WARNING:

.
To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative (which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation) all maintenance must be performed
by an authorized NISSAN dealer.
.
Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system.
.
Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to do so
in this Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses are covered with yellow insulation (either just before
the harness connectors or for the complete harness), for easy identification.
Precautions for Steering System

The top of my steering wheel has also gone soft...think it may be a fairly common problem....rather than replacing the steering wheel I simply paid a little over a fiver for a chunky steering wheel cover....worked a treat...

Been looking at those, can get a replacement wheel for £12 without the air bag, then again got a few momo & that knocking about the house, may just look for a boss to fit.

Not a big fan of airbags with Christine sitting so close to the wheel when driving, seen first hand what can heppen when bit's from the wheel as hit peeps in the face when the bags gone off.

There was a few bosses listed on ebay so it maybe worth having a look as I would rather fit a mono steering wheel than a stanard one
