There is much debate around the manual hubs dilemma, should I or shouldn't I.

I have had a couple of dramas lately concerning 4wd/2wd-transfer box, slip diffs, yadda yadda etc.

I was was unsure if it was any of the above problems and didnt want to fork for manual hubs straight away until I identified the problem.

Having read numerous threads regarding potential causes and subsequent conflicting information to rectification, I have decided that as I drive in 2wd 99% of the time, to remove the autohubs on a permanent basis.

Since then the car no longer as the loud banging and freewheels lovely. It used to feel as if the hand brake was left on but on the front wheels only !

I believe this was due to the offside auto hub locking on as it did look assembled incorrectly, yet the banging seemed to come from the nearside.

I do intend to purchase manual hubs eventually,(jan not a good month !!) and the question is- does anyone think I will do any damage in the short term by removing them.

Hopefully this thread may help someone in a similar predicament.ta

If you take the hubs off, take out the brake rings and springs and then put them back on, you will have no 4wd, but i can't see it doing any damage at all. Even if you selected 4wd you would just have no drive to your front wheels and no damage.

I did this once and drove like it for around 300 miles, with o ill effects at all :thumb2

as he said. then put the rings back if you might need 4wd.... still wont need manuals :thumbs

Cheers plank,it is a very complicated issue and it is no surprise that engine/running gear is by far the most mentioned topic.

4wd is not the most important aspect of driving my T2.I lts the space and the 7 seats for me.

I must admit if i were never going to use 4wd and needed 7 seats i'd go for something more ecomomical! But i do like my T2.

There are a few downloads on servicing hubs and replacng them with manual hubs, they will help to identify the its you need to remove. :thumb2

dont depair iv been working my way threw the odd jobs that need doing on my recent terrano purchase see my recent posts next week its getting new half shaft seals, bearings brake shoes and cylinders which i hope will be the last things until a small bit of welding when it warms up, i agree about the 7 seats and low milage so its a good purchase especially when i had to rescue the mother inlaw recently when it snow here and stranded her at the hair dressers in a small village out the way oh and all the other fun i had in the snow to :D

When my Auto Hub's were giving me trouble about 5 years ago I removed the brake ring and spring. Ran like that for several months without any problems at all.

still sems a shame not to use 4x4, get your hubs changed for manuals (do the hub service in the download section first), or fixed when you can and give it a go - its what they are made for :thumb2

£30 from Nissan for a new fan resistor, a rip off but not a lot of choice, Rick

Pop to your local scrapyard. I got mine from a Nissan primera for a few quid.

Depending on which one you got I'd avoid soldering, The reason it stopped working because there was too much current drawn for whatever reason. I think you can solder the MK1 type.
