Hi guys I'm looking for some kind of removable tow bar thing. I've got a tow bar and hitch on at the moment, which is used frequently.
However when off roading it sticks down a long way and tends to do a bit of ploughing!
I was taking the micky the other day cause my mates disco was pushing the hill along in front of his front diff., so he's now pointed out the slot I leave behind me 8O
So I'd like to find a removable one so I can also get down steep drop ins.
Cheers

I just take te sandrd one off and back on as required. Only 6 bolts pretty quick and easy to do. Have been known to do it at the start of the day in the carpark where we've met when laning.

High HB do you mean the whole thing? If so what do you do with the electrics?

you and me both, my thought is a US style receiver, though higer than currently thanks to moving number plate to door, wheel, or high level.

ideally slot would double as point for a hi-lift, on road would use a slot in drop plate, offroad a straight slot in pintle or shackle mount.

know any friendly welders upto it, also would only apply to those trucks upto s reg due to euro regs, atleast on passenger vehicles.

btw elecy wise my 12 n is loose connector style and shove up behind number plate at moment. eventually would like higher still ie on the 'step' buumper.

Friendly welders all over the place round here, as the local farmers are still keen to repair than buy new
I like your idea of putting the electrics in the bumper area.
I think I get the idea of a slot in hitch, but its the plate behind it that does most of the ploughing.
Are there any pics of these american jobs?

Yes my eectrics are just loose too. Going to mount them on the bodywork on th enew one though and carry a small 1m extension incase cables too short on any trailers I pull.

But yes I just take the whole thing off as I say 6 bolts. You can then get at the proper recovery points attached to the chassis which will take a 3 1/4 T shackle direct and use a bridle across them.

thats a good idea about a 12n 'patch' cable as had wondered what would do if trailer cable didnt reach, clearly would make sure own trailer(s) could.

Can't take credit for that one, a mate of mine from out Jim-terrano's way with a silver bobtailed discovery has his set up like that and suggested the patch cable.

removable tow bar

on some of the tractors i used to drive we made a tow hitch that picked up on the three point linkage.it was held on with pins with a lynch pin through a hole in the end.(agg peeps will know what i mean)i suppose you could keep the original tow bar and just replace the bolts with pins with a hole through and a lynch pin through that.just 6 clips pins out and tow bar off.(in theory  )

presume swap 6 bolts and nuts for a headed rod, sorry can tthink of tech term and an R clip, that would speed job up. after all would suggest an Rclip to retain slot in bar in receiver, similar to quick release front towbar see workshop 32 i think

guess this is wahat i thinking thou maybe over size called a hitch pin and securing linch pin.

http://www.toolsandleisure.co.uk/hitch-pin-34-x-6-78-43-p.asp

probably more secure than an R clip too.

Either of those would do it - though not sure about type approval - but they'd tend to clank around - a bit like a landy height adustable one that work on a clevis pin and linch pin - their dead noisy.

tow bar

thats the ones.had that style on my shogun tow bar.can get them in various sizes as they look a bit big for the job.mind you we used to machine our own so we could make them any diameter and length.might have to have a chat with the machinest at work to see what he can rustle up.

thanks guys, clevis thats it. suppose if right size should reduce noise, could
a rubber washer be used either end to soften noise. certainly
type approvel issue for you guys s reg and beyond unless vans or pickups.

imagine would be tempted to eyeball them each time towed to make sure
not failed or tampered with though.

trying not to go to far off topic based on workshop 32 i fancy one for shunting
but wonder if a front receiver below the chassis would reduce
approach angle or tend to foul. HB having had bumper off for lift
do you think it would be possible to mount above chassis rail with a cut
out in bumper. thinking if both side done could use with a bridle for
better front recovery.

You could go into te bumper mounts, they're pretty substantial, the actual bit s of bumper that attach to them are flimsy but the mounts of the top side of the chassis rail are good. I'm planning to fit winch bumper nto them but also into the recovery pigtail mounts either side below the chassis rail. Pretty sure thats where the hidden winc mounts mount.

removable hitch

hi my disco has a SOUTHDOWN TANK GUARD WITH A REMOVABLE HITCH JUST TWO PINS AND ITS OFF REPLACE WITH A NATO HITCH FOR OFF ROADING DAYS.
RBRT HAVE A LOOK TOMMOROW
RGDS IANDOUGLAS
SORRY about capitals just realised .

had a good look at Ian's setup, certainly handy in protecting tank too.
Also viewed Dinky's t2, with bar removed for off road work and loose
electrics stashed away.

Thinking still a receiver would be useful as a location for a hi lift and
would help protect tank even if not a full shield.

on subject of lilift reckon my steps are pretty tough certainly take some
hammer off road, any thoughts on add jack points to them and using
them as sliders for now. reckon front reciever(s) would be handy for jack
too.

removable hitch

rbrt hi .
I DONT THINK THE SIDE STEPS ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO JACK YOUR TRUCK UP WITH .AS THEY ARE ONLY BOLT ON.
IF USING A FARM JACK CAMERAMAN SHOWN ME A FITMENT HE HAD MADE USING A RATCHET STRAP.
Remove the old ratchet from the short hook up part of the system.
replace this with a D link large enough to fit over the foot of farm jack .
Place hook end into WHEEL place jack close fit D link and lift away.
