Numbers numbers numbers, you can prove the world is flat with numbers, fact is you can pick your motor up on one wheel nut and shake it all about and it will not even notice, Rick

well i only read the numbers for actually towing things on the road, as it does provide a pleasant alternative to geting arrested :thumbs

I think after all the evidence :lol a tow ball can be used to recover within reason & not as seen in the clip
Obviously a ball / pin would be better :thumbs
I cant see any harm in using the lashing points for recovery :nenau

I'm interested to see what Terranosaurus & extreme-4x4 have to say  :nenau
well if the vehicle to be recovered is that bogged down. then pulling off any one recovery point could bend the chassis

ideally you should be using recovery points on both side of the chassis on both vehicles.......... but who ever bothers when your stuck

I think it's reasonable to use equipment with clearly marked ratings, and that these are persmissably great enough for the jib they are being used for. While theroreticaly many things may actaully be strong enough, it is all just speculation and it would be dificult explaining your theories in the event of an accident. Proving you have done your best to use the best equipment at your disposal in a responsible manner has to be the way forward :thumb2

the trol has a ball jaw combo and is top rated db type, id use
the pin to secure strap.

on my t2 only had ball so used a large shackle which fitted
neatly under ball around the neck to provide a reliable
and secure point for strap.

before that, i also pushed the strap thru its own end loop
in the manner you might secure a dog lead to a pole or
chair leg to restrain it, then it tightens around the ball in
almost a slip note manner. just more fun when come to
undo it....

"slowly does it dear"

All this talk of towballs is boll*cks really as if you want a decent "hitch" to connect to "to use as a EMERGENCY TYPE of recovery point, then look at what is fitted on military vehicles and you will see they use a "nato hitch" on the vehicle and a "nato eye" on their trailers this is fitted NOT just for towing but "wolf type" landrovers (dirty word on here I know) use these as a "recovery" point as well, as any strap fitted will not jump off as they do on any "ball" type. Also all of this again is shi*e if these fittings arent fitted in the first instance PROPERLY using H.T bolts etc etc and to the correct torque setting as given by the said manufacturer. As for off roading then a 4x4 manufacturer wont say what is to be used as just think of all the law suits that could be put against a manufacturer IF they told you where to put your strap and you just took the head off someone. What most people are doing now is to fit a rear winch as well as a front one as so many people have pulled the arse of their 4x4s. Look in any Landrover international mag and youll see that rear winching is quickly becoming the norm, now I know a lot of you will say "well landy drivers are Wa***rs any way BUT a lot of 4x4 off roading has come about due to the Landrover 4x4 scene, afterall it is them that keep fighting to let us use greenlanes etc....I only have 1 tip for any type of recovery, its like the 80 yr old said to the 21 yr old "slowly does it dear"

Still new to off roading as Ive only had me 4B for a year
:sly :naughty :D
But as long as you have common sense & ya not a COCK as the earlier clip shows you should be ok to recover via "lashing points", tow ball, ball'n'pin, nato eye or wolf type i think.
If the lashing point gives way then ya got a ****ed chassis as Pete said it is part of the chassis & ya not gonna get any stronger than that :augie :thumbs
Apart from my marine rope the rest of my ropes are all 2.5 tonne & all my shackles are 2 tonne & they have been used on various 4x4's & a 24 tonne Scammel & have all worked fine with correct pulling power applied :D :clap :thumbs :augie

And of course theres a fundamental flaw to a lot of this, which is that 99.9% of the time, the easiest recovery route is BACK OUT THE WAY YOU CAME because otherwise you are not only trying to pull 2-3 tons of deadweight, but also trying to overcome whatever obstacle its stuck on/in...! No wonder people think they need to do kinetic pulls and all that stuff...a bit of schoolboy science is all thats needed most of the time.....:doh

if thats what floats your boat

Couldn,t agree more Lacroupade and there everyone is another reason why people are fitting rear winches and not relying on the front winch or helpful person at the front trying to get /drag them out of the POO so to speak. As for rated straps this is an absolute mine field as again its quotation time "it says oxo on buses but they dont sell it inside" SO DONT BELIEVE everything you read on labels remember these people are working in a super clean enviourement (spelt wrongly but could never spell it) and aint up to their neck in shi*e Although some may say that what are you supposed to do then????, well thats easy as a fellow once said AVOID THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE..... but getting back to topic if you cast your mind back to the snow earlier in the year ask your self this question "how do you think the police were dragging those whod gone into ditches out etc ??? they used the tow ball on the back of their 4x4s... so enough said really its all down to common sense... as most things really are and remember SLOWLY DOES IT

but it will have the software for the hp on it too ..... wont it ?

Err no! I explained that...you usually have one disk with the drivers on and the other disk that reinstalls the operating saystem (XP). The OS disk doesn't know or care what its installing on.

Just make sure you have all your data off then give it a go. It can only fail but what have you lost?

OR, go and buy some proper AV.
