IIRC, I think there are 4 in total, all inside the body, so the bumpers probably make no real difference. One is under the passenger seat, and another is behind the handbrake. There are also 2 satellite sensors for side impact in the bottom of the "B" pillar.

I took the 'trol into the local dealer about 6 months ago for a fault with the airbag warning light. They reset the light foc and just told me to come back if it came on. About a week later I got a call to say that now the car was on their database it had flagged up a recall on the passenger airbag.
I booked this in and they had it for 4 hours. When I went to collect, they told me they had not been able to do the work as my model needed the whole ECU replaced as part of the recall and they did not have the part. Finally, about another 2 weeks later, they had the car for a few more hours and returned it with the work completed.

I was just glad that the planned re-mapping of the ECU had not been done or that would have been a few hundred pounds down the drain!!

Hmmm might give them a ring to see if mine needs doing only because i've got a scuff on the passenger air bag cover:lol

Not to worry, I have no passenger air bag but I wouldn't mind a new ECU to fix the flashing air bag light I have :sly

It's important to know where the sensors are, especially if using say a big hammer to re-arrange the metalwork around the front wheel arches for increasing any clearance.

Is it true that certain conditions have to be met before airbags are deployed, like ignition on, minimum speed etc?

In some cars, eg some skodas, the sensors are in the doors, and even removing speakers, can affect the deployment, as would adding extra ventilation, or driving the car without the door cards on.
So it is important to understand when making mods what affect you might have on these sensors.

I would expect 4x4 vehicles to have toigher sensors, as you wouldn't want the air bags to deploy on rough roads or in off road conditions.
 
The addition of bull bars cancause the airbags to deploy early as the bull bar takes the shock earlier as it wont crumple like panel steel.... the g sensor for the airbags is in between the driver and passenger seats underneath the center console..... arb australia have designed special mounts designed to replicate the shock absorbsion in a crash triggering the airbags at the normal rate as if the vehicle had no bars fitted.
Here in nz. We just remove the airbag system.

This is debatable, I would hope that if I got rear ended on the side of the motorway broken down that the airbags would deploy but I suspect you are right about the ignition. :nenau
 
I wonder if the engine remap will cause them to not do it or it will will be reset to factory settings. Also if they refuse to do it will it affect any insurance claims in the future Just remember its Nissan !! :eek: David

No The Arb Bar it's self is a miracle of engineering designed to protect you from a 180 KG Kangaroo at 100 kph...

The mounts (the parts in red) are what are fitted to allow the bullbar to absorb the forces of an impact with (whatever you hit) at the same rate as the structual design of the vehicle the bar is fitted too.

The brilliant part of this design is the cleats will collapse on them selves in a frontal impact, but won't stretch when forces from winching etc are applied the other way.

The cleated mounts fold on themselves slowing the effects of an impact more gradually allowing time( we are talking milliseconds here) for the airbags to deploy as per the manufacturers specs....
If the bullbars were solid mounted to the chassi, the shock from a frontal impact would deploy the air bags too soon and the airbags would already be starting to deflate as you face and head approach the steering wheel/dashboard and your body/head would be at risk of coming into contact with the steering wheel/dash board in that scenario.

Airbags are designed to be fully inflated in the time it takes your body to move forward from the whiplash in such a scenario....

But that is really a moot point when off roading.....any one here with a 98ish T2 notice there airbags and ABS don't work when in low range?....

I hit a tree at well over 50 kph sliding down a muddy hill, airbags didn't trigger and the ABS didn't allow the wheels to turn under heavy braking.
 
ABS and Air bags don't mix well with off roading , the end :sly
As far as re-maps etc, it's tough luck to Nissan as the car is well over g/tee time. As long as you have insurance for your mods and a valid MOT what's to worry about ?
 
Bud, it's interesting seeing those cleated mounts for the ARB bumper, clever idea.

Even more interesting as my bumper to chassis mounts look nothing like that and mine is one of the airbag compatible ones! :augie :eek:

Also interesting about the airbag system and low range as that was a fair impact I had into a muddy bank when offroading a few months back and the airbags didn't deploy. I thought I'd just been lucky but maybe not as I would have been in low range at the time :nenau

If I'm doing anything with the front bumper I turn off the airbags by disconnect the battery and then leaving it for 5-10 mins before I start working to make sure all the residual charge has left the system.
