Rear tyres scrubbing

Hi All

Both my rear tyres are scrubbing on the outer edge only. Any ideas as the the cause??

2.Are they the correct offset
3.Have you put new tyres on
4.What terrain are they

Thanks for the replies. I have no mods to the original specifications. The tyres are standard tyres on it and since I am useless with anything mechanical, I think they are road tyres as opposed to all terrain or mud tyres (the side wall has H/T on it ??? road tyres).

The tyres were new when I bought it about 4 months ago. Could it be the LSD???

Thanks for the reply. It is only the back wheels. When i first got round to checking the tyre pressure about 6-7 weeks after i got the T2, they were all too high and I lowered the pressure to the correct value as on the owners manual. I thought originally that the high pressure was to help stiffen the suspension since it is very wallowy. I am now thinking that it was maybe to prevent this though i dont know why - standard spec tyres as per owners manual.

That'd be my guess too - try running them 2 psi higher and see if it still happens.

Do you carry any load about?

The back tyres are inflated to the recommended psi for towing my caravan (I think 29 of the top of my head). When not towing there is littleweight in the back.

When I first got the pressure checked, they were at 35psi, which I lowered to the recommended setting and the ride improved in terms of harshness but it became more wallowy.

I'm a bit like Mr. Slow from top gear:lol. i dont go fast at all in it. However now that you mention it, the truck is used by wifey in the evenings for her work as a district nurse and she goes like a bat out of hell.

Maybe the riddle is solved remedy --- divorce:lol.

As 'Terranosaurus' said but slightly different,just go up a psi at a time till the rubbing stops...
One thing i would do is check the wear on the tyre as over or under inflation will damage your tread either in the middle or the edges.!

Make sure theyre at the correct pressure, measure the tread now then in a few miles the wear pattern.

Mechanical wear can cause varying wear patterns but as often as not ..............Edges going = under inflation or hard driving, central portion going = over inflation.

DO NOT overinflate to compensate, sort the root cause. If you overinflate for normal road use. You'll get crap ride but worse the back end can break loose more easily.

I had it 26 in the front and 29 in the rear (even when not towing) but the scrubbing continues so i would have thought that if the rear were to wear they would do so in the centre of the tread????

The make of tyre is 'cooper discoverer' H/T.

Has any one swapped the wheels from front to rear like the garage?

Check rear suspension

Have the car 4 x wheel alignment checked and adjusted

Hi All and thanks for all the replies. The tyres are the ones below. I was wondering could it be due to the LSD oil????? My filler plug is leaking and whilst there is likely to be a fair bit of oil in there, i am sure it would not be the correct level.


Cooper Discoverers 235/70R16 H/T on nissan alloys. There are also the letters M&S on the side wall of the tyre - dont know what they mean and in small letters the word 'traction' and a letter A after it - again, I dont know what it is.

If it's only scrubbing on one edge of a back tyre then surely it's not pressure related!
Camber problem! Maybe a wheel bearing, but odd for both to be shot.:nenau
