Been told the spring mounts are rusted.

Yes part of the chassis. There’s a few people fabricated new ones or got replacements from donor vehicles.
Having seen the space where they are I would personally cut a hole in boot floor above them as that will give you access to safely weld. In fairness the boot floor will probably be rotting so a good opportunity to hit the boot floor too.

It wouldn’t put me off doing the job.

Have a look for Terrano breaker's Lincolnshire.
The outfit is run by a guy called mikee Howell.
He fabricates the spring holders for you to weld onto the chassis.

Iv'e used Mickey for parts but not the spring mounts.
