Rear LSD oil change?

Evening, back again...more problems.....

Just jumped in the terrano to take it for a quick spin. I've not used it for quite a while as the Mrs has been running around in it.

Went to pull off, slight turn on the wheel and was met with a very loud shuddering grinding noise! Turned the wheel the other way same again.

Sounds a bit like driving in 4wd on very grabby concrete. Got the Mrs to drive it forward very slowly while turning and the rear wheels are shuddering as they turn.

Worse when reversing.

Even worse than the reversing....the Mrs said when asked how long has this been doing this...she said a couple of months:doh:doh

I'm hoping its just an lsd oil change...any other suggestions before I swap out the oil?

Yes, its one of the many things I miss about the UK. The costs of anything related to cars / vans is a lot heavier here.

So I've mucked about with this before. I used the official Nissan additive cost me a fortune and doesn't seem to have lasted. This time I'll use the above.

My diff is the bolt on cover so I'm assuming 3 litres will be enough? Also I've seem to have a very slight weep from the filler and drain plugs. Last time I did these I just nipped them up without anything on the threads. Should I use some sort of compound / ptfe or is it normal to just go au natural?

Hi Dave.
You'll have the newer, cheaper rear axle then. With the bolt on plate to the rear.
3ltrs of LS oil will be more than enough.
I use ptfe tape on all plugs without problems:thumb2

Edit: Solved!! Only 1.3 ltrs goes in the c200 diff.

The Mrs reminded me of the problems that I had with this last time. I managed to get the 2.8 ltrs in by parking g on a slope...we then had issues with the breather pipe dumping excess oil into the chassis ( still, it won't rot from the inside out ) and I ended up parking it on a level surface again, opening up the fill plug and let to g about litre of oil out.

Thats the problem with my brain/memory....I can remember some things but others just get filed away and I have to be reminded about them and even then sometimes I still can't remember.

Just drained the oil. I reckon I've about 1.8litres. :nenau

Now I'm fairly certain that when I refilled this a little while ago I would have gone with the 2.8 litres that it says in the book.

There looks to be some oil has pushed into the chassis via the breather pipe suggesting that I have overfilled the last time...but that doesn't explain how I've a litre less than what I should have.

Do the bolt on cover diffs hold less than the documented 2.8 ltrs?

The oil is also very black and shiny! The magnet was thickly coated. Let's hope there isn't irreparable damage.

Still I suppose its only been grinding away for 2 months. Can't have caused that much damage right?

Thinking about the filler plug location surely it is nearly impossible to over fill the diff oil.
Also due to condition of the oil that came out I would be tempted to change the oil again in another week or so depending upon mileage you do of course. Hopefully then the diff will be flushed out with fresh oil.
Also might be worth removing rear drums to check there’s no oil leaking from the rear hub seals though with such a quantity missing it’s surely likely that any leak would be visibile running out from around the drums.
