My rear door handle has decided that it wants to play up and when I try to open it using the normal amount of pressure it won't budge, I have to take my index finger, really push the handle in and quickly pull on the door.

I have had a look at the mechanism and when pulling the inside handle the little white catch appears to move correctly and opens the door with ease however when doing the same with the outside handle the white catch hardly even moves. I've tried oiling the mechanism and it's made no difference.

Do they both use the same cable and if so is there any adjustment I can make to the outside handle or do they use separate cables and the outside one has stretched in which case, will I have to replace the cable?

the external handle has a plastic rotating wedge type thing inside the door you need to lubricate it here and poss turn it up a notch as it will be worn, same applies to all the handles, Rick

How do I get access to it? Door panel off or external door handle off?

Thanks for this information as I've been sufferring with this issue myself and wondered how I was going to fix it. Just been out and did both rear doors. Easy job to rotate the little white plastic bit and problem sorted. :clap:clap:thumbs

Awesome!!!! I'm going to have a crack at this tonight when I get home from work, I'll try and take some pictures and then we can maybe make it a workshop download???

Who would I speak to about getting it published?

Right out to the car I go to do this job and also a few more, I'll provide some pics later

I've been outside for 45 mins earlier on and I've had the whole thing apart!!! Lubed the bit that you stated and lubed the internal mechanism and still nothing!!!!

Has anyone got a pic of what I should be adjusting or shall I take one, upload it and someone could highlight the area?

The only thing I can see on the external handle is a metal loop that hooks into a hole in a blue cup on the mechanism

I'll have to go back outside when I've finished watching Broadchurch as I've still got the internal door panel off and earlier on I didn't have enough charge in my phone to activate the flash :doh

There is a white nylon bush in a metal bracket below the blue bit - down near the lock itself. If you operate the inner latch you will see a metal rod sliding up and down in the white bush. The white nylon bush just pops out of the metal bracket and you can rotate it to give different height ridges for the metal to sit on when the external handle is operated. Depending on which height you are already using, use a higher one.

As descriptive as that was I'm still struggling to find where I have to make the adjustment lol

Here are some pics I've just been out and took

Sorry Banshee, but thats completely different to my setup. I've got a 2001 T2 - I guess we need someone with a pre-facelift model. Excellent pics though.

Ah no worries, I'm glad I wasn't being an utter dummy after all

I tried to make them as high res as possible so people could see in detail what they were playing with, I hope I can get this sorted as at the moment the external handle isn't working at all

Looking at the pictures again and having a think about this last night, can I not just bend the brass arm up so that the metal hook has less distance to travel to pull it down?

If one thing's for sure I now know how to break into any maverick/terrano without breaking a window lol

Drill through the large black bit with a massive drill bit, put your finger through and push the metal rod up for the unlock, and then push the brass arm down to pop the door, bingo!!!! lol, when your in 2 bolts and replace the mangled external handle and it's as good as new

What I would do is operate the internal latch (which I presume works ok) and watch what happens and the distances travelled to operate the lock - which I'm sure you have done. Get someone to operate the external handle and do whatever you have to to duplicate the actions and distances without messing up the internal mechanism. Try to keep away from anything that is common to both internal and external. I notice you have cables - they may have stretched. Try shortening the external latch cable temporarily (ie wrap it around a bolt) and see if you can work out a fix. Bit of lateral thinking required methinks!

Fixed!!!!!!!!!!

The brass plate was functioning correctly however the latch just wasn't opening enough to pop the mechanism, a quick bend of the brass plate upwards and the silver loop attached to the external door handle has less distance to travel to make contact with it and hence spends more time in contact pulling it down which = working door handle :D

It's not one of those things you can take pictures of really, it's one of those that you have to figure out on your own lol
