What's the story with gearbox and front diff oil? How often to change them? If I open the window I can smell what seems to be gear oil of some type, usually only on a long drive. Closing the window I get the normal interior smell, takeaway food, cow dung, sweat, last month's pizza, half empty coffee cups etc etc.:augie

ive posted the service intervals according to the manual :thumb2

Thanks to all for the info, to be perfectly honest I change the engine oil at 5k as a diesel mechanic once told me that if you do only short journeys this does have a effect on the oil which I remember having on a petrol opel manta years ago, you could take the cap off and all white type emulsion slime was in the rocker housing, do apologise as I meant fuel filter changed at 10/11k or yearly.but it was the diffs and transfer box, gearbox etc that was causing concern, on a seperate note after reading a lot of threads since joining I have today cleaned the mini filter on the fuel side of things as I thought Id strart my filter/lubes voyage there and WOW what a differnece it makes, it was very dirty and I cleaned with white spirit and blew out also with a air line turned down a few turn and its now spotless, so I am going to give it a few miles say 75/100 and do it again when I fit a new air and fuel filter. If anyone hasnt done this they should I was amazed, Thanks again to this forum, brilliant, Monty:clap :clap

Hmmm... gotta admit, with both my T2's I've never changed the gearbox or front diff oils (first one did about 70k - this one 10k so far...) - have occasionally undone the fill and stuck my finger in to check the levels.
Would be interesting if anyone knows recommended change times

Oh, my car generally smells of cow dung... or sillage at least - and occasionally wet dog!!!
