rear diff??

Can anyone help??

Since I picked up the terrano 2 mths ago it's had an issue with the rear diff?
Whilst reversing at low speeds with any kind of turn there is some kind of friction and judder and clunky/grindy noise from the rear wheels the harder the turn the worse it get's.

I have taken it back to garage with the complaint and after some head scratching by them and a ohh! that's normal on these? I mentioned that mabey that the oil needs changing? and that I had read that changing it with the correct oil was very important?

So that's what they did? (with the reccomended oil by nissan apparently?)

It did seem a bit smother for a few weeks but now it seems to be getting worse I can now also feel it going forwards slowly with just a slight turn again more turn the worse it gets (much worse in reverse with any turn). (not noticable in a straight line)

It feels just like transmission windup? but why would I be getting it? and is this normal?

It is't anything that I can't live with but if it is going to turn into a major problem then I only have a limited time to get it sorted under the warranty?

The garage is 150 miles away so it's a bit difficult to drop it in and this time I would like to armed with a few facts?

change the OIL to the right LSD one..

for a start..

make sure your front hubs HAVE disengaged too...

Nissan dealers have been known to recommend the wrong oil.

when i own my t2 got the oil from Nissan for a LSD that's what they recommend said the guy at the counter
Purchased said quantity while looking awaiting to pay puled a label of shown stock code and it said
NOT FOR USE ON LSD DRIVE SYSTEMS
well the parts man had no idea, and it got worse service said that's what they use all the time
Sorry but don't always trust what someone says. I used this in my t2 no problems but a bit pricey
Castrol SAF-XJ 75W140 full synthetic diff oil (front + rear); contains LSD additive

The only way to know if the correct oil is used is to do it myself?

I didn't want to mess with it originaly as I had a few other thing for them to sort out and I didn't want to give them any reason not to honour the warranty if I did, but I think it's worth changing the oil first before arranging a 150 mile trip?

This might be stupid question? but how do I check the front hubs have disengaged?

Yours may well not have free wheeling hubs - the later ones didn't. Pop the hub cap off and have a look to see what is under there - better dtill take a photo and someone can tell you

i had the same problem on my old terrano at junctions if the steering wheel was slightly off it would judder as i move off.

what i did to solve this was to get cheap lsd oil (because it is expensive to use top of the range oil for this bit), drain the old stuff put the new oil in drive for about 40 miles then drain it into a bowl which has big magnet and it should attract filings,you can then put that oil in again and do about 40 miles and then empty the oil into the bowl with the magnet, examine the magnet if your satisfied that it is clean then you can put in the recommended oil and this worked for me.
