I there new bee hear from chesterfield just changed rear diff oil and got a lots of bits of steel on drain plug is it safe to drive

What was it driving like before you changed your oil?
Hope you used lsd oil.
Sounds like the plates in your diff are wearing.
Could have had the wrong oil in for a while.
I'm no expert but there are plenty on here that will point you in the right direction.
 
was a lot of vibrating as i drove back from newark sunday. so change oil put LSD in.sounds a lot better now. drive ok

Hi and welcome.

If the previous oil was not LSD oil, then draining it and refilling it with LSD is the correct way to go.:thumb2

Other members who have done this, have done a second change a few hundred miles later, and this helps to purge out the old remnants of the wrong oil, and helps to clear the sludge from the friction material, that builds up in the diff as part of the normal operation.

What were the metal bits like? if only iron filings type, ie fine, and wipe off the plug easily, then this can be considered normal wear and tear.

if the diff is on its way out they will start whining.
as rustic says small metal bits are quite normal and the drain plug is magnetic so should pick them up .

Ih there its 5 bit of plates with lines in it. will i need a new diff and is it ok to drive

I think you have answered your own question, you say it drives better now you have changed the diff oil. Do it again in a few hundred miles as others have already said.
Is your number lock on your key pad, as some of your words are mixed up :nenau or do you have sausage fingers like some of us :lol
 
As said change oil in a few hundred miles again, I wouldn't worry too much

I'd drive it until it breaks
 
I'm glad a rear diff thread has come up as I'm going to hijack it slightly now if the OP doesn't mind?

The new Terrano I'm picking up has the old cheapo Renault diff that is weaker than the old ones found on my 96' Maverick.

I'm sure there has been talk of this before and I'm not sure if it was achievable or not because of the diff ratios but is there any way of transferring an older Diff in place of the crappy new ones?

First thought... prop shaft might be different due to maybe a different location of the mating flange.
Ratio might be different, easy to check, chalk up a line on Propshaft, and on wheel, Rotate Propshaft say 20 revolutions, count how many times wheel goes around. The more you rotate, the greater accuracy.

cncfabs should know as he must have supplied a few over the years.

It would mean a full axle swap & poss the prop aswell:augie I've got the later axle & TBH it seems fine, Nissan fitted the same axle to the Xterra which was sold in the US & Canada & i've seen pic's & vids of these truck being put through their paces & from what i've read no one has had a rear axle fail

I never got told about a transfer, it was one of the things I wanted to do to mine as I have the baby diff, but to be honest you ain't ever gonna break it, I've done some heavy off-roading and hit some nasty rocks underneath, it ain't gonna break, :sly

Do you offroad? Me cant remember?

It's weaker in terms of the internals not really the casing. If it was the diff housing you could just beef it up with metal.

To be honest for green laning or light/medium offroading there's no point changing it.

Question is then, why and under what circumstances would you need to change it?
 
Bigger tyres put more stress on the internals or going more extreme,Maybe loosing traction then regaining traction the wheel can grip violently putting stress on the diff/axle internals.

think you will find it is the clutch plates that are weakest point of newer dif, but whatever to upgrade to the older dif as said before it is a complete axle change, Rick
 
My diff was a second hand one anyway when I bought the car. Had the typical breakers scribble on the arse of it :lol
