rear diff oil change

Changed the rear diff oil this weekend, never knew it would make such a difference in how the car drives and corners.

I had a little bit of water contamination in the oil, some small metal splinters on the magnet in the plug. And this came out:

It performed OK before (with the metal part in), performs even better now. Anyone an idea what this could be? And, more important, should I be worried? Magnet confirmed it is steel, no aluminum.

It looks to me the way it's all coiled up that it might be swarf from the thread when the drain plug was removed before, if it's working happy days :clap

Naa - if that were a tin worm and it got to that size then it would have eaten through the chassis by now :lol

No large tin worms living in my chassis, in the doorsils though...
Anyway, drove the car a lot on- and offroad the last two days, as our shooting seasons started. Worked a charm, it now - almost - takes corners like a normal road going car

My Maverick used to love going sideways but the new Terrano I've got holds no matter how much grief I give it round bends :doh

Well, as I managed a day off today, I went for the K&N air filter change........it seems to rev more freely, pick up a bit faster.....seems generally ...perkier....:thumb2

I hope that's OK.....:nenau

I then managed to get under back axle, mine is the one with the faceplate on the prop shaft side, and having done as much searching on the site came up with the volume of 2.8 ltrs. The drain plug had some metal filings on it but nothing I would deem worrying.

Well I put in 3 ltrs and it did not seem much, so I am a bit concerned that I have underfilled it and it will graunch up.......

Any advice or re-assurance would be gratefully received.......:bow:bow

Yes but his is a 3.0 diesel, his diff might be different and require more or less?

could be your LSD is not to good then, jack both rear wheels up and you should only just be able to turn one wheel with a 3 to 4 foot bar, if it turns easier then it is worn, Rick

Same diff on 2.7 & 3.0, just differing ratios.

My old SWB was a real sideways moster:lol but the LWB is much calmer on the road will still kick the back out if I over throttle it but like you Banshee i've went from the old style rear axle to the newer one:augie

Thank you guys,
I did check the Comma site some time back and it recommended 2.8 ltrs for my model. I determined my axle type by back searches on this site, so determined what oil and quantity to use.
I just have a very cautious nature about anything expensive........my car!
I am reassured and once again grateful for the great support and advice given on this forum....:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2
