rear diff locked

I have had the rear wheel up off the ground today to do the brakes and noticed that i cant turn 1 wheel if the other side is on the ground,even though its in 2wd,i lifted both wheels and they both spin in the same direction.Is it normal for the diff to be locked like this? Does it unlock once the truck is moving?I have not notice any problems on tight turns.To be honest i dont really under stand how a lsd works if it is a lsd.
 
In 2WD in the air, if you turn a wheel the other should go in the opposite direction.
On the ground the wheel with the least resistance will turn & the other wont.

rear diff

i had the rear brakes apart a couple of weeks ago to change the rear wheel cylinders and noticed the same as you , as the vehicle drives ok i put it down to the LSD and this being normal.

thats what i expected to happen but its like the diff is locked and the wheels wont turn unless both are of the ground and the they both turn in the same direction

Sorry, that bit isn't normal. What I meant was that if you have a LSD, both wheels will turn the same way.
Can you turn one lifted wheel if it is in neutral?

no,i try to turn it,it moves a inch or so then locks and the drive shaft moves a bit to when i try to turn it.
 
sound like the diff is locked , i had a rover v8 with a welded rear diff to stop[ the wheels spinning
 
jack vehicle up and turn one wheel clockwise, if a lsd is fitted the other wheel turn clockwise as well, if it's an open diff the the other wheel will turn anti clockwise. :thumb2

but if the diff was permemt lock woudnt road driving kill the diff,and surely i would notice it on tight turns?

I have already done this and they both turn the same way,the problem is i cant turn 1 wheel if the other is on the ground
 
What you have said is perfectly normal and is what should happen, with only one wheel of the ground you will need more force than just your hands to turn it.

working perfect.
and rear wheels will only spin together if both lifted and main box in neutral.

lsd are soo useful, so many times, not even off road proper when you
benefit, i know know with my troll as its a true locker all or nothing and
traction is lost when the old t2 would have kept going with out thinking.

on troll have to lock it bfore slip, and knock it back out again when done
sharpish.

get out there and enjoy it.

The diff side gears that normally allow free rotation in an open differential are braked for the want of a better word by a series of friction discs each separated by a plain plate, these “packs” of plates are loaded by a spring disc. So to turn one wheel with the other on the ground you have to provide enough torque to the wheel to overcome the sprung loaded friction discs. When you have both wheel off the ground they will both turn in the same direction as the differential is turning as a whole unit.
 
That is a relieve,after discovering i need 2 new slave cylinders and new shoes the last thing i nedd is a buggered diff,thanks
 
it due a mot this week,will it be ok doing a normal rolling road test for the brakes?
