Just found engine oil dripping from the bottom of the bell housing.

I'm 99% certain it's coming from the rear crankshaft seal.

Anybody changed one? Gearbox off or engine out?

I've got access to a transmission jack and hoist but no lifting gear, at least not enough for an engine so I am thinking gearbox off.

I can't find a listing for the seal anywhere so I suppose it's off to Nissan parts :(

First thing though will be to see exactly how bad it is and can I live with it and will it survive my forthcoming Morocco expedition.

I did have a fantasy about some kind of magic engine oil leak sealer but I guess I have to get it sorted properly.:nono

Are you sure it's engine oil, when my clutch was changed on my old 2.7, the guy got covered in gearbox oil when he split the bell housing, he found the front seal on the box had been leaking but had nowhere to go..until he split the unit apart

I had that scare when I first got my mav a couple of years ago.

Get a rag, wipe behind the head below the rocker box, and as far down as you can reach.

Check a few days later, I found the problem was rocker gasket, whew,

yes most likely the rocker cover, most unlikely the crank seal never seen one leaking yet, Rick

I'm afraid it is the crank seal. Back of the engine is dry as a bone all the way down.

Oil first appears around the bottom of the bell housing and is engine oil for sure, very black.

I've been looking at gearbox removal and I don't think I feel like doing the job myself. Too old, weak and soft these days, think I will see what it will cost for a "pro" to do it. I have some contacts but it's going to be an arm and a leg - ho hum.
I've done a few LR Gearbox/transfer boxes and more than a few trucks but I'm out of practice now AND I was being paid to do those.

I wonder if some crap got in during my deep water (mud soup) adventures a couple of weeks ago, its come on suddenly and in good amounts.

Well she's all booked in for the rear crank seal next Monday, hummed and ha'ed but decided I couldn't face the job without proper tools.

I will have another crawl around underneath, just to 100% sure but I'm afraid there is little doubt.

The new seal is ordered, about £56, seems a lot for a seal but only seems to be available from Nissan.

Hopefully the clutch will look OK. Could do without putting a new one in as well but if it has to be, so be it.

Got some more muddy adventures arranged for Sunday so it will be hose pipes at midnight. Can't take it down to him covered in crud.

Ide get the clutch done while they have it out unless its very good. Not going to cost a lot more just parts

pressure plates seem rock solid, but centre plates are not so good so if you need to save penny's just put a centre plate in unless the friction material is near to new thickness, Rick

if your having the engine/box apart, I would defo get the clutch done

I do take your point all and if there is any doubt about the clutch then it will be done but I believe it has been changed relatively recently in mileage terms. We shall see.

I'm now totally peed off. :(:(
Got the seal changed and a nice new oe spec clutch fitted and all seemed well.
Didn't do the job myself as it was beyond my equipment.
Lent the car to my daughter before the weekend and its come back with oil dripping from the bell housing again.
So it's back with the nice man again to find out what's happened.
Canny beggar got me to get the oil seal so he says that if it's a faulty seal (not really very likely) or the leak is coming from somewhere else it's down to me. My mistake for telling him it was the rear crankshaft seal. :doh
This time though I will be there when the box comes off, I want to see the problem for myself.
The upside is that I did have a really good thrash the weekend before it went in first time.
Made quite an impression with the Lokka, the traction is amazing even on wet rock and loose wet scree. Even tackled mud on AT tyres. I should be on commission :D
