OK guys first real time that I've touched Terrano rear brakes, have fixed other cars in the past though.

So it's the 54 plate truck.

I'm expecting the drums will be a pain to remove, probably have a ridge worn in them. Besides the thread hole to screw a bolt through the front face of the drums is there any adjustments to release?
Cables will slacken off from behind the lever in the centre console but to be honest hand brake is so high I doubt they'll need slackening off.

Is there anything to look out for?

You'll be surprised Jim. A good thump with a large hammer could be all they need. :thumb2

OK guys a little advice please. The drums came off a dream with the two bolts. Have a look at the following photos, the brakes generally look to have been well looked after. Looks like a recent cylinder, adjuster and hardware kit.
However, the shoes look like there may be a problem. One shoe has worn more than the other as you'll see but also the surfaces of the friction material looks pitted and even slight cracking. Not sure the friction material should look like that so thinking of putting new shoes on.

What's everyone's opinions please.

Was there any problems with the brakes in the first place? If not, I would leave well alone...

The truck seems to stop fine. The handbrake comes up to the top. I adjusted it up to about 5 or 6 clicks and they started squeaking as I was driving so I'm guessing they were binding. So I backed the cable off again.

Only got the os wheel off so far but I'm guessing they'll be similar condition on the other side.

you could run some course sand paper over them and inside the drum and try it i myself would replace them as you have it apart i like to know my brakes are as good as they can be and shoes not that dear to replace for peace of mind recently did mine due to handbrake not too good i did shoes wheel cylinder and handbrake cables plus one rear bearing plus i did flexi too

In my experience, the rear shoe does always seems to wear much more than the front, to the point that I wondered if mine was seized up, but everything was fine.

The crazing on the friction material is normally a sign that the breaks have got very hot, like someone has been driving with the hand break on, or it being over adjusted.

Personally, having taken it all off, I would be replacing the shoes at that level of wear.

If I recall, the rear brake linings are a different thickness from new to start with.

But it's a while since I changed them.

You are correct Rustic. There is a difference in thickness on new shoes.
I too would be replacing them Jim.
Stay away from Bosch though...

Flipping heck I hate that car, it fights me at every opportunity. Got one side almost done with an awful lot of swearing. Now I remembered why I have never touch terrano rear brakes. There must be an easy way those springs are a real pain.
By the way yes the rear most shoes are thinner even when new.

I remember it well Jim. :doh took me ages.
Rick can probably do them with a scotch in one hand:lol

Ouch my flipping finger hurts, a nice bruise under the nail and I'm still not finished. Had to go out for a hardware kit, some bright spark had made a right mess of the pins and washers on passengerside

Finished! Grazed knuckles and a black finger nail:doh

Pulls up in a straight line, hand brake holds on hills. I guess that means it's working then.

Front ARBs tomorrow and she's ready for mot.

Jobs a good'un then, well done. Nice to tick the jobs off.

The truck may be fighting back a bit but sounds like it is realising who the real boss is :)

Good luck with ARBs
