Gents, I have a major issue with my drivers side rear brakes. When travelling along the rear brake drum on the drivers side binds and can only be released when rolling backwards. The drum is getting very warm indeed.

Any ideas?? And how to fix the problem?

Wheel and drum off and have a look is the only way, possibly a lining or part of has come adrift, or the HB cable has got snagged, I had this once cannot remember the details but where the inner cable hooks into the brake shoe lever something had moved? the washer on the cable? cannot recall Rick

It's also possible that one of the shoe retaining pins may have come free? You should be able to see if they're both still in place by looking at the back of the drum. You should see one pin retaining each shoe. If you see a hole instead, there's your culprit :thumb2

Anyways, best to take the drum off, and have a look. Don't forget to give the HB cable some slack, there is a workshop download on that if I'm not mistaken.

Right I have taken the drum apart and funnily enough the rear shoes had come away from the shoe lining. The wheel cylinder is also shot to pieces. So I need new shoes and a new cylinder. I believe they are 280mm by 65mm (the shoes that is). Anyone able to confirm if this sounds about right?? I have a 2001 t2 sport 2.7tdi

Right, ordered the shoes/fitting springs and wheel cylinder from Milners who were fantastic as usual. Fingers crossed it all goes to plan :thumb2

I've replaced the shoes, there was nothing wrong with the old ones, everything looks good but I have this horrible noise from the offside rear wheel when reversing:eek::eek: can't understand it at all now :nenau

when did you last change the diff oil? I had similar when I was supplied with the wrong oil, you only notice the os wheel as it is the one you can see, have a passenger listen on the ns, Rick

A job for the week end - if it is the diff - what's likely to be the cause? can it be changed?

you misunderstand, just change the oil, it can cause what you think is a mechanical problem, it is because the clutch plates in the diff bind up and judder due to the wrong oil, Rick

Changing rear diff oil is piece of cake, you can even do it with all wheels on the ground. Just make sure:
- you can actually open the filler plug before opening the drain plug
- you use the correct oil (API GL-5 / SAE 80W-90 gear oil for use in limited slip differential)

You need about 3 litres if I remember correctly. Fill and drain plugs take a square 1/2" ratchet thing.
