During some troubleshooting today I discovered that the grease seal of the nearside rear axle shaft is leaking.

This is the seal which required you to dismantle the axle shaft and not just removed it from the vehicle. The grease seal is behind the wheel bearing and as the lock nut is torqued to 441-490nm it doesn't seem to be a job to do at home.

Has anybody changed the grease seal on his axle and how did you do it?

Jim,

That bit is the same on both cars but unfortunately this is not the grease seal. If you look at the top photo on page two (your link) then you see the axle shaft looking towards the back of the brake backing plate.

You need to disassemble the wheel bearing to get to the grease seal. The grease seal stops any leakage at the actual wheel hub. The wheel hub is held on to the axle shaft with a locking washer and a locking bolt which is torqued to around 450Nm.

Initially I hoped it was the oil seal as shown in your link but no luck.

I will see if I can post a photo later this weekend.
