i have a nissan mistral 2.7td automatic and it wont go into fourth gear. the sellanoids are ok, the tranmission fluid and filter are ok, have tried another transmission ecu, have tried a different accelerator switch sensor, have tried another fluid heat sensor. it is at a garage who specialises in auto gearboxes and he is having difficulty diagnosing the problem. the only wiring diagram we have is for a terrano and there is a few more wires on the mistral. i have only just bought it and it has only 70 000 miles on the clock, need help. kind regards dazzer:confused::confused::(

4th gear

Did you buy it with the fault and have you any history on the gearbox going faulty ?

Its a long shot but I had an experience with an Audi 100 Auto that would rev through every gear but would not go into top.

It initially had a new valve block and finally a new gearbox but the fault remained, Luckily it was under warranty and an Audi engineer discovered a short in the kickdown switch wiring loom that meant the switch was permanantly in the on position.

If you bought it with the fault it would help if the previous owner could link an event to the failure or if it started dropping out of gear over a period of time. e.g. When towing etc.

In my 45 years of driving automatics I have never had one go wrong internally but the new generation of automatics are not as robust due to the advent of manual mode autos.

BUT and its a big BUT, the Mistral will be 15 years old or more and 70k miles is seriously underusing the thing. Thats worse than high mileage.

Theres a sensor that typically goes dicky and stops it dropping into top - can't remember much about it but someone on here has had it before.

And to be honest, he can't be much of a specialist can he...its a pretty fundamental problem?

Don't know where you are Dazzer but let us know and someone might have a better idea as regards garages....

i live in hull, east yorkshire, if you know of anyone who can help me it would be much appreciated. it would be nice if i could get my hands on a diagnostic program for the computer which checks through the system. then we would know the fault. i have rung alot of places and searched the internet but no one seems to have or know anything. the only diagnostic program we have is for a terrano which is limited because it only works on more modern 4x4. the guy who is looking at my 4x4 is genuine but his hands are tied due to the lack of info. kind regards darren

4th gear

Hi sent a message via contact us but here goes...had same same problem L reg Mistral it would initially go into 4th but when warmed up wouldn't. Sent to various 'Specialists@ cost a small fortune couldn't fix it even contacted Japan direct-terminals 6 & 7? found that Gear box temp sensor would 'open circuit' ended up putting 1k resistor across them. 5 years happy mileage no more problems think we gave wiring from Japan away when we sold car. Nissan Japan were fantastic when we contacted them even faxed us wiring diagram. Hope this helps? Let us know? Good luck. Angie & Mike

after thought

Hi it won't let me search because I am no longer a member but try a search for Angel posts and you should find information on what numbers to put the resistor across-it was a few years back but should be there?

mistrel

hi angel. i have tried looking at your older posts but i cannot find the one on the terminals, i am just in the process of trying to contact japan , i will see what happens this week. the mechanic has already tried but has had no joy so i will have a go.:thumbs

have you read through this ? its explains symptoms/causes etc , plus gives you a very good ( workshop manual ) idea of what you are dealing with .

kind regards and good luck

pete

Thanks we tried the info you sent us but a mistral is slightly different to a terrano on the wiring side of things and on the ecu pin out. :)
