We were moving a flat pack shed for a friend from Scotland to england about 158 miles and we only got 107. We were pulling about 2 tonn:eek::doh up a long motorway hill and the temp was starting to rice rapidly from it's usual half way position to right up in the red zone:eek: so we turned the heaters on full to pull the heat away from the engine...that worked a bit but it soon went up into the red zone again until there was a really really loud bang:( we stoped at a cafe at the top of the hill. I opened the bonnet and the radiator was steaming badly. It had blown. Water was coming out underneath and it was a rusty colour. you could see it boiling on the road. So we turned it off quick to avoid seizing the engine. The AA got us and the trailer back home. I managed to get a new rad from a friend who's a mot tester. He got one from a 1998 with the bigger engine and I need to know will it fit a 1994 2.7. I took pics of the terrano when it blew up which I'll upload later.:thumb2

Even pulling two tons thats not normal. Make sure you change your thermostat and flush the system well....on a truck as old as yours one or both is likely to be blocked or knackered.....

They didnt do bigger engine on 1998 model i do know the petrol and diesel rads are different so if it will physicaly fit it will be fine.Would leave the rad cap off at first as it sounds like the head gasket may have gone if it exploded the rad.

Ditto - the 3.0 wasn't fitted to the Terrano until about 2002...does he mean a 2.7 TDi maybe?

i bought a tdi rad for my 96 td and it was too tall.now got a 2.4 petrol in it.had too modify pipe work tho

I can see that would be likely - the TDi was a facelift away from the square headlight jobbie so they might have chanhged the front profile a bit - or maybe put a bigger rad to improve cooling??

The rads should be the same,

The new rad is in :D flushed the whole system. Put all new pipes on and coolant bottle from my scrap terrano. All Is really well. The rad water was rusty. But it's been all flushed out and is clear now:thumb2. Cheers for you're help. As the rad was from a tdi, I had to drill holes in certain places because the rad is slightly taller.

Thermostat came off my scrap t2 as it was new. The old thermostat had melted And all the wax had gone funny. Boiled the kettle and put the thermotats in and one moved and one didn't. Jod done. I'll put piccies on when I get chance :)

The old rad was wreaked anyway. All the cooling find were crumbling away:nenau

NOte to self, don't pull over 2 tons :doh

i wouldnt worry if the truck is up to scratch it will pull this all day it just found your weak link in the chain probably would have let you down at some point any way
i dragged three tons of sand and gravel the other day no probs just dont expect warp factor ten speeds
nice to have a scrapper to canabalise:clap
cheers Andy

+1 on that...it only failed because of that frickin thermostat, otherwise you should be towing two tonnes up anything.:thumb2
