hi all, many of you will know i have this odd issue that bugs me (but woudlnt bug anyone else!) where at idle, the idle will randomly become slightly uneven, almost as if it were to stall or is under load. revs do move, but only slightly. car has never stalled, and drives fine. anyway, i was wondering, could a worn clutch cause this kind of issue??

just a thought,.,,

currently in the cold, it SEEMS a bit better, but then if i were able to adjust the idle ever so slightly, the thing wouldnt happen, i know that much, but i cant adjust the idle.

dont think so it should run as normal until you try set off.. dowt its the clutch

When at idle, the clutch is only transferring drive to the lay shaft in the gearbox, ok the oil is thick, so there will be some resistance.

Monitor the Battery voltage, it may be the alternator regulator cutting in and out, this could load the engine and on the Tdi, the ecu will increase the power, on petrol/diesel generators on no-load they used to "Hunt"
rev up and down.
See if putting the headlights on changes things. ie better or worse..

Regards, Rustic

interesting points guys cheers, ill check the battery and alternator as soon as I can...

if your rev counter is electronic its an electrical problem, if it's cable driven it's coming from something mechanical, ie the engine

yeah im drive by wire, so electrical. Im fairly sure whatever itis must be electrical, but i was thinking this morning about the clutch and how it make a little bit of noise (nowt to worry about) so i wondered if that could affect it in any way...

Noise when you press the clutch down or
when the clutch pedal is released?

released...like a slight rattle, not very metallic, hard to describe. When pressed, it goes quiet. I thnk someone said it was the clutch release bearing a bit worn??

The clutch bearing only works when you press the pedal down, so it is probably the input bearing on the gearbox, add some molyslip, and slightly overfill the gearbox by 250ml, by jacking up nearside a little.
Do a search on "molyslip gearbox" and you will find my post of a comment by Molyslip.
Catch it early..

awesome, something else to worry about!!

ill get the molyslip ordered in time for welding day, and add it then!!

Mine started to whine a little as you approached T junctions using the gears to slow you down, noise is less than 10% of what it was, Richard at Molyslip said it would last another 80k miles without major issues, that will take a few years, I must admit I was concerned about the gearbox, the earlier model maverick /Terrano left the front bearing starved of oil, hence the slight overfill.
The later boxes should be better though, but moly slip (2 additives) will improve the gear changes as well, and help refresh the seals, I had a drop a week coming out of the rear seal, of the transfer box, I also did that, and the leak has stopped, no the oil hasn't run out:eek:

To add the oil, make sure the filler will come out first if you intend to change the oil, I used a funnel tied to the fuel filter with a length of garden hose going into the filler, put in the molyslip, then wash down with more oil. if you are doing an oil change, warm the oils first, in a bucket of warm water etc
If you are just adding the molyslip, lift the nearside and squirt some in using those ink syringes, (Without needle) again warm it first, it is like syrup.
Good luck, I hope it helps.

thanks for this, ill give it a bash sounds a touch more complicated than i thought but ill get the right tools together and do it!

come to think of it, i dont have ANY whine at all....

We had an Austin Ambassador that only made a noise at 70 mph, it was the clutch, it ran for ages until it eventally needed changing, When it was taken out I looked at it, all the bolts were loose.
When the oil pump failed this was loose assembly, and the clutch slave cylinder leaked as it was contaminated with sand.
British Leyland quality control.

So back to topic, it might be loose or worn parts in the clutch but others could advise otherwise.

Has the clutch been replaced?
Did the noise suddenly start?
Others would say get a louder stereo.
See what its like next month is it worse when warm or cold?
Molyslip won't harm it anyway.

I noticed my engine was noisier the other day, when the windows were open,
I'd removed the under tray to do the waxoyl, it's amazing you notice these small changes and you do get concerned when something is different.

i tell a lie, it does whine, very very slight, i paid more attention on my way home today, and i have noticed the whine before, just never thought anything of it. No change when warm or cold, engine sounds the same warm or cold with the exception of very cold starts sometimes.

no idea about new parts etc, i dont think the clutch has been done, but it certainly needs a full service/molyslip!
