Can i turn of the passenger air bag .....so i can fit a child car seat :nenau

when required ??????

it will void ur insurance

MMMM:( Well thats no good then ! :(

but on my wife car she has switch that turns off the air bag in front ..while having a baby seat fitted ( toyota avensis tourer on a 10 plate ) and no problems with the insurance there ?:naughty

Yes, our other cars have switch in the end of the dash on the passenger side, key operated I believe. But bear in mind there are new rules about ages of children in front seats etc so best check all that out too :thumb2

What make you say that, as some cars have a key so you can turn it off. Emmas Pug was one of them. And all 2 seater cars with airbags have to be able to be turned off for this reason.

and in them cars its fine but not in ours as ours doesn't have the said switch

If you do remove/disconnect any of the SRS airbags fit a 2.2 OHM resistor to the connector that you remove from the airbag unit, or the SRS ECU will throw a fault condition and render the rest of the system inoperative.
You could of course arrange to switch between airbag & resistor.

Best to remember not to turn the ign. on with either the airbag or resistor disconnected, or you will have to reset the fault condition.

thanks for your help :clap i will make up a change over switch.....its only required to be switched off when i have to fit a rear facing child seat :augie

Might be worth noting for saftey reasons on many airbag units the connections on the airbag are shorted together when tha connector is removed. Will be a good thing to arrange the switching such that when the airbag is out of circuit that you ensure the connections to are shorted together.

tbh , the thought of anyone wishing to disconnect the air bags fills me with horror , lets not forget its a safety device , also its a explosive device , so playing with the connections could be dangerous , its a definate no no in my opinion , but i suppose we make our own decisions :nenau

i know it sounds BAD:eek: but many NEW cars have switch to turn the airbags off ...when carrying babies in rear facing car seat ....in the passengers seat .........its better to switch it off than kill your child sitting in the seat with the AIRBAG :eek: It will snap there necks like a twig:(

The irony of this safety device is that if deployed where a baby seat where fitted the consequences would diminish safety to the point where infant fatality or serious injury would be almost certain.
He is not planning to disconnect all of the airbags, only one, the front passenger unit in order that he can safely fit a rearward facing baby seat, a standard feature available on many other vehicles as standard.

Simply disconnecting the passenger airbag would prevent SRS infant injury but also render the rest of the system inoperative, thus compromising the safety of the other vehicle occupants.

I agree, "playing" with the connections would be a bad idea, however a well thought out and tested implementation can be safely executed.
After all, many people happily work on braking systems, a safety device we rely on every time we drive the car, the thought of a brake seal fitted incorrectly fills me with horror!

Your thoughts have however reminded me that there should be a clear indication to the occupant that the SRS is disabled, as in my Octavia there is a clear indication to the passenger that the SRS unit is OFF for their seat.
Sparrkiedoo should implement a similar indication, even if baby can't read it!
