Just a quick question for those with pre-face lift cars (up to '97)

I wrecked my original gearbox 18months ago and since replaced it with a pre-face lift gearbox. The main difference between them is the bell housing is shorter and the oil capacity isnt quite as big (by 1.5litres)(on the older ones).

Does any find there gearbox gets really warm after prelonged use?? My mates face lift mav doesnt, but i can really feel it warm on the gear stick and gaitor. I assume its natural, for the latter reason above but just want to check before i shoot off to Spain in a few weeks.

Btw, its got fully synthetic gl4/gl5 in it (from the difflock.com shop)

Don't have a pre facelift model myself but I am sure someone who does will be along shortly to answer your question m8.
I was wondering though how you compensated for the shorter bell housing or did everything just bolt straight up ?

Hello Mate,

I've got a 1995 2.7 LWB Maverick, pre-facelift. I've never had any problems with heat from the gearbox, even on runs to Warwickshire to see family, or covered in mud on the way back from Salisbury Plain. Are you sure that you're using the correct oil ?

Hmm, dont think it should be getting warm. I had three pre faclift mavericks and one of those had a trashed gearbox, but even then it wasn't warm:nenau
I cant remember what oil I put in mine after I fell over, so best check the downloads I guess. Good luck and join the RAC :D

My round headlamp model gets warm on very long trips or when we used to tow a caravan. Warm but not hot.

its been in the car for over a year now. i was running semi synthetic and that use to get ever so warm, hence the reason for putting the fully synthetic in. ive never noticed it before until recently. im going to check the oil level in it and also the transfer box (as that might be getting hot and transferring the heat.

I was wondering though how you compensated for the shorter bell housing or did everything just bolt straight up ?

i didnt fit it but from what the bloke told me it was a pain in the butt. the bellhousing had different bolt holes in places. the cross member had to be moved forward. the exhaust mount was different. the sensors for the reverse and 4x4 light were in different places. oh and because it was shorter, i had to get different props. nightmare, total nightmare.

btw, if anyone has a face lift gearbox thats knackered (so i can repair it or my original) or one thats good let me know, thanks

Had mine serviced over the weekend, the oil we took out of both boxes was ATF. According to the Shell spec sheets, this is the correct oil and what we put back in.

Lee.
