How do I know if my Prop is dying?

I've been getting some funny noises recently which I believe to be coming from either the Prop or the gearbox

Overun from 3rd to 2nd seems to be the worst, I get a rattle, no whining or anything just slight knocks as well when I put it into gear and loose the clutch up I get a knock as well

I've been underneath and looked at the prop and there seems to be slight play where the prop attaches to the back of the gearbox, the play seems to be from inside the cup with the flared edge if that makes sense

The Prop is going to be the cheapest thing to start with so I'm just going to replace that first and see where to go from there

Any ideas or input guys?

to be sure of your prop simply remove the 4 bolts on the diff end and take it out, you can then feel for smoothness and play on each UJ, if you have roughness or play then simply replace the UJ easy, Rick

What UJ's should I be using as a replacement, you got a link for any?

Also, how do I top up the gearbox oil? I'd like to do that because as far as I can see looking through the paper work on the car, the last time that was done was 10 years ago

just pop into your local motor factors they may even have them on the shelf, there are not that many, and cheap, as for the GB oil if the box is not oily on the outside then it will have the same amount in it that was originally put in, but to check there is a half inch female plug about half way up on the off side oils should be to the bottom of the plug hole, but worth changing it if it has never been done, Rick

That'll fix it :D
I landed my T2 after some good air right onto a huge rock slap bang in the middle of the prop. T2 slid off and carried on. Rumbled something rotten on the way home and imagined a banana shaped prop under me about to leave the building
When I got home and had a proper look there was a scuff on the prop but the UJ was virtually in bits. 40 mile and home , 41 would have gone booooom :lol

Same kind of procedure as doing the rear diff oil?

What grade and how much?

Good effort!!!!! I'm beginning to hope that that's the rattle I'm getting from the back as well but not holding out much hope as I'm 99% sure thats the diff
