As i have so many things to do on my Maverick, I though I would start a single post and keep it updated. Hopefully so I can get tips along the way and also so that I can remember what i have tried and what I need to try.

Anyway here is the list.

1. Front Suspension Sagging, Drivers side is slightly lower than passenger
To Do: Wind Up ARB

2. Crankcase Pressure in Engine (Blows like an exhaust from the oil filler cap), uses water.
Done: Checked for Mayo in oil filler (none), checked for Milkshake in water res (all clear). Purchased special stuff to hopefully fix cracked head.
To Do: Find which cylinder is causing problems by running engine with cap off and removed HT leads 1 at a time?. Uses stuff that claims to fix cracked head.

3. Poor Fuel Consumption.
Done: Ran test over 4 weeks and 4 tanks of fuel, driving 60% motorway, 10% Rural and 30% Stuck in Traffic. 2 Tests showed 20mpg and 2 showed 18mpg. Have changed spark plugs and air filter.
To Do: Steps relating to problem 2, plus oil change, fuel filter change, check auto hubs are not locked on.

4. Passenger window does not work, not does central locking if locking door from passenger side.
To Do: Investigate Elctrics in Door.

5. Center Exhaust Blowing.
Done: Buy new Centre Exhaust
To Do: Fit new Centre Exhaust

This will all take time as wife keeps getting me to DIY the friggin house.

To be fair it does sound like your motor is past its best- given the crankcase pressure, lousy mpg and HG / cracked head symptoms..

I have tried so called miracle-fix treatments that claim to seal up water loss. I've had no luck, and its only treating the symptoms, not the cause..

First stage- get a leak-down test done- this will show the general condition of the engine and also if it is leaking ito the cooling system. You could pull off the head then if you like.

I'd probably then be looking for a good replacement engine complete. I'd possibly pull the head off that to clean it up and check. Have the head skimmed to bump up the CR (they are only 8.6:1 to begin with) and improve its VE, have a light porting job done to help it breath and then sling it in.

I wouldnt waste money and time with a band-aid approach...

Tim.

Hello Mate,

sorry to hear about your Maverick woes.

Just a thought, judging by how cheap Mavericks and Terranos are at the moment, wouldn't it be better to buy a good condition one, (preferably newer and diesel), rather than chucking money at the one you have ? You could recoup some of the cost by breaking yours.

Just a thought bud.

Lee.

P.S. Does your Mrs know mine ? I'm sure they're giving each other ideas !

Hello fellow 2.4 grief striken mav owner :?
I've got one just like it
From bitter experiance with the 2.4 JUST DONT BOTHER 8O
You will be able to buy another for a couple of hundred quid that still works OR as already suggested bin it and get a newer diesel one.
I tried for ages to sort my 2.4 with small success. Bought another for £214 off ebay and its brill
Also if you look on ebay at the mo theres quite a few diesels at 400/600 quid.
Also as already said the parts are worth loads compared to the car value.
Good luck 8)

Mine only cost me £300 with 12 months MOT so unless its a fairly DIY cheap fix, i will just run her for the 10 months I have left on the MOT and then sell as Spares or repair.

We currently have 3 cars and as my wife rarely uses hers (she takes the kids to school on her bicycle and trailor) we are going to get rid of it. Her car should fetch £600. I'm guessing I may still be able to get £200 for the maverick with the problems, so then I can go out and get another one as I have become quite attached to driving them.

I'm going to have a go on the above things anyway as its all a learning experience and I know in future more about these things and what does and doent work.

YOu say you've changed the plugs and filter - it would also be worth changing the dizzy cap and rotor arm - they tend to get forgotten these days with so few cars having them.

Yep forgot them myself. So used to individual coilpacks. Will get them ordered and probally change the HT leads also.
