Hi All,

This is my first post, I am new to the Nissan Clan having just purchased a Short Wheelbase 1997 R-Reg Terrano II 2.4i X-treme.

Unfortunately it didn't have any manuals with it so I'm a bit in the dark at present. I've looked at some of the links to manuals (although most seem relating to the diesel models anyone with a specific petrol one would be appreciated) but not found the solution to my problems.

I'm not sure if it should have remote central locking but it didn't come with any Key Fob. If it should have where is the best place to get a Remote and get it programmed.

All I got was 3 key's.

Now when I turn the key in the ignition all the way as you would to start the car then it won't turn over.

If I turn the key to the point at which all the ignition light's come on then just turn the key a little more (not all the way) then the engine will yurn over as normal and start (most of the time) if this a faulty ignition barrel, I suspect it is.

Also another problem I have sometimes when I turn the key to the point when the ignition lights come on the Engine Management light flashes which means then even when it turns over it won't start. I must admit I'm not sure if it's something to do with one or more of the keys. Will try and check this out further tomorrow.

I know that's a bit long winded but it's a bit difficult to fully explain.

I've also got the good old problem of the heater fan only working on No. 4 but thanks already to the forum and some of the fixes listed I'm sure I've saved my membership costs already. Cheers for that.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

hi and welcome.

a terrano of this age should have nats.

which is a remote centrol locking and imboliser.

you can pick up fobs on ebay or main agents.

theres a workshop down load to explain programming
of them.

sounds like contacts in barrel of duff. I replaced mine
in about 30 minutes, cost of part about £20.

as you say if you turn key s l o w l y then it should
start as contacts or whats left have more time to well
contact.

a proper key will have a transponder in it to turn off the
immoboliser. usually a red area on the key. a copied
key without one will open the doors and allow the ignition
to function for accesories but clearly wont allow engine to
start.

sometimes issues with check light can be reset by disconnecting
battery for 24 hours, also allows ecu in engine management
to reset. make sure car is unlocked whilst doing so or lock
doors manually as i guess you are doing.

as i recall the alarm will only active with a remote fob. locking
the doors manually does just that.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply, yep sure it does have the NATS system, I just wasn't sure if it was playing up or not.

All the keys have a red bit in the top of them. I'm wondering if the NATS isn't registering them properly and therefore not allowing it to start.

Do you know if it is possible to disable the NATS system?

So did you replace the whole barrel or just the contacts, don't suppose you can remember where you got the parts from?

Do you know if there is any particular remote fob I should be looking out for, do I need to check the cars frequency first before I buy.

Questions, questions, questions... Sorry.!!

I had the very same problem with mine and it too turned out to be the switch that is mounted below the ign barrel. It cost me about £35 though. Hardest bit is that the switch has a small x head screw fastening it to the bottom of the ign barrel, it is a hard one to get to as it faces in to the steering column. I used a driver bit from a magnetic screwdriver with an 8mm spanner to turn it but i have heard of people bending a screwdriver.

The key fobs are for the alarm if fitted and central locking, look on the down loads section as there is a workshop on reprogramming them. There are usually some on ebay. Where abouts are you? There may be some kind sole happy to reprogramme one of theirs to test your system.

I don't thin disabling the NATS will help you at this stage.

trouble starting

ive just replaced the switch on mine as i had the same problem.got mine from parts gateway for £25 delivered next day.have you put your nats in programme mode :?: i did this unknowingly by repeatedly turning the key trying to start my motor.trouble is you need a fob to re-set it.i had to open the door with the key but it set the alarm off until i put it in the ignition and turned it on.all sorted now thanks to this site

Thanks Guy's for all your replies, most appreciated.

Don't suppose you know what exactly I have to ask for when ordering this, not sure if they will know what I'm talking about if I say switch below ignition barrel.

Cheers
