Hello everyone,

I bought a Nissan Terrano 2 2001 2.4 petrol two months ago with 4200 miles on it and have faced some problems with it recently.

The last two weeks it has been hard to shift gears on it. It "chrunches" / "rasps" when I try to change gear and it happens more and more often and on all gears except from 1st and reverse. I can feel it in my hand but also hear the sound. :( I have tried double clutch but makes small difference.

I changed the transmission oil last week (gl4) but no difference. Ive checked the pedal bracket but cant see anything odd (dont really know though what to look for). The clutch reservoir is full.

I cant really se any pattern when it happens, sometimes i can go to work without it happen but today i needed to turn back home again.

Hope you guys can help me.

PS. Sorry for my English.

I've had this before and like you changing the fluid only seemed to make a minor difference when cold.

I cured my issue fully by adjusting the bite point on the clutch pedal, this involves undoing the linkage on the rear of the pedal but the adjustment then needs to be done via the bulkhead :thumb2

Let me see if I can find my write up as I'm sure I took some pictures :nenau

Could be a couple of things.
Worn clutch pedal bush
cracked clutch pedal assembly
clutch itself or release bearing but doubtful with the milage??
low gear oil
slave cylinder flexi pipe
clutch pedal free play but only usually needs adjusting if a new clutch has been fitted.
clutch damper leaking
then there is the gearbox itself

Thanks for your answers. I took out the pedal bush and it looks really worn, super thin on one side so bought a new plus clevis pin on ebay today.

I cant find any leak or so but the clutch fluid looks really old, dark brown so I will change it soon.

Where is the flexi pipe and clutch damper?

Thanks, would love some pics!:thumb2

Clutch damper runs from the slave cylinder on the side of the gear box to the rear of the motor along the chassis.
Flexi is also on slave cylinder.

Update. I were lucky. A clutch fluid change cured it. It was almost black so have probably never been changed. :thumb2

Good result:thumb2
The simple cheap fixes are the best ones !!!

After reading this thread I also changed the fluid this afternoon.
Not sure when the last time was when they did it.

I was doing some long over due maintenance the previous owners had neglected to do and changed the brake fluids. And since I had some extra brake fluid left I checked the clutch as well as it had been having similar symptoms . I should have taken a photo of the clutch reservoir when I emptied it. It was so gunked up with black mud like substance you could not tell how much fluid there was.

Poor old '98 2.7TDi has over 500'000 km (about 310'000 miles) on it.

Hope the new fluid does not cause any leaks.

If the fluid was that thick and gunged up there is a small danger that the new fluid will be more searching and sneak past the seals.

As the fluid is hygroscopic the water contamination can cause some internal rusting too.
Hope the fluid change works full time.

Good to know. Better check for leaks more often then. Thanks for the heads up. :thumbs
