Hi all - new to the forum and hoping some of you guys can help. We've just become the proud owners of our first Terrano II (1998) and there are a few teething issues that need sorting.

Concerning the back doors (ie not the boot), the near side one won't open from the outside, nor the inside. The offside one opens OK from the outside, but not from the inside.

I guess that the near side one needs attention, but not sure about the offside one. I have tried to locate the child safety locks (which I presume are standard?) but can't find them - is there a switch on *both* sides, or just on the nearside to operate both sides (which would explain why I can't find them, as the door won't open at all!). The handbook does not make this clear.......

On my 1996 there is child lock switch on both rear doors. Have a look at the door catch and youll see them easy enough.

Have you got the H/book from here via the downloads? Can you hear the door lock clunk as it locks and unlocks.
Welcome to the forum. David.

Thanks for the quick responses chaps.

supergnome: yes, all the cluncking is audible. Just to add a bit more, on just *one* occasion only, when trying to sort out what was happening with the near side door not opening at all, it did open from the outside (using the black button on the key fob), but subsequently it would not open after that (many tries!). I was given a handbook by the previous owner - is the one on the forum different, and where do I find it?

jims-terrano: Can't see them - are they located on the actual door, and are they only accessible when the door is in the open position? Maybe I just didn't see them - will have another look when this deluge stops...

terrano bob: thanks for the welcome.

Here's a picture of the near side rear door child latch on mine.

Partial success! Thanks for the picture too Blocky10 - I have found the switch and was in the locked position, so that is now sorted.

However, the problem remains with the left hand side rear door - it just will not open from inside nor outside, but I am pretty sure it is cluncking. Any ideas anyone?

Something come undone inside the door. Not sure on the mechanism inside but sounds like it might be a tad tricky.

If door card can be taken off whilst door is closed that would be my idea. Then you can see whats going on

Welcome and good luck, plenty of help on here.

Any pictures? :naughty

Hi AlexD333. It looks like you're right - will probably chicken out and ask our friendly mechanic to sort this one. Door panels and me have a history of being a pain. There's nothing really to see as regards a picture, unless you meant a general photo of the car..

Thanks

sometimes the internal adjustment gets out of kilter and makes opening doors tricky, a possible method is to push the door closed as hard as you can while pressing the exterior unlock lever, this takes the pressure off of the latching pawl and the door may open, failing that it is destroy the door card to get access to the interior, replacement door card should not be a problem, I have a choice of 3 or 4, Rick

When we were looking for our T2, we came across a few where the rear doors would not open, and by the third, we were very frustrated, and said so. The sales person walked up and opened the door...

We tried again, but could not do it, and then he showed us the "Trick", which like Rick said, was to push the door shut with one hand, while lifting the handle much further than you would think you should, and then the door would release.

We did not go for any of them though, so I never had to fix it.

Hi again Guys - Sorted now. First try (as suggested), I pushed hard on the door and squeezed the handle and it opened. :clap Obviously hasn't had much use - it's fine now and works every time!

We're very impressed with the help received on the forum. I have one or two other queries that may require help, so shall start new threads for them.

Cheers

Excellent news, much cheaper than paying someone :thumbs

Keep an eye on it though and learn how the door card comes off it you get a chance. And regarding photo I meant a general of the terrano :thumb2

Well your annual subscription has already paid for itself with the money you would have spent on a mechanic :lol

If you do sign up for the membership you get a whole downloads section available with loads of freebie bits and maintenance too

Alex he has and he has. Glad your doors are sorted out, chances are a bit of tlc and theyll be fine.
Check out the downloads section in quick links. As for the things with the car just speak up and there will be answers at hand.

Tidy motor indeed! Get some wax or polish on that!

Red like that looks lovely but looks bad when the sun eats it :doh

Nice looking motor:thumbs & glad you've managed to get the door open. My rear doors were very stiff to open when I got it due to very little use so soaked the door catches with oil & made a point of opening them up a couple of times each week & they have freed off nicely:D

after removing the door card where the outside lever pushes the lock you will find an adjustable plastic part with three steps adjusting this cures it, Rick
