Driving into Asda car park went through a deepish (6in) large puddle with nearside of the Patrol. Power steering disappeared and vehicle pulled to left. Struggled a bit with the wheel, then power steering returned - all normal.

I've had a poke around underneath and can't see anything obviously wrong. Any ideas? I'd hate this to happen at speed - could be very nasty.

belt slipping when wet ?

my bet would have been on the belt slipping as you say pete, perhaps the belt is already loose. Id also check no water is getting into the engine via the air intake or I/C pipes...

Thanks

....yes the belt does seem slack. I'll sort it. How much play would ya recommend.

i believe play should only be enough to push, with your finger, about half inch max, there is a guideline somewhere, but i think generally less than half inch is good.

Should be the same as ya fan belt etc i think :thumbs

Your going to have fun taking the other 3 belts off to change the power steering belt. I would change all 4 and then you can forget about them for a while:thumb2

Great minds and all that..

Funny you've said that ..... I just purchased the full set from Milners as I had the same thought........Not done yet, but on the list!

Easist way to do it is

1. Take off the radiator cowl, the bottom edge is clipped on, the top is held on with 3 bolts/screws.

2. Unbolt the fan from the viscous coupling.

3. Slacken power steering belt adjuster and remove belt

4. This is the worst part, watch you knuckles
Slacken alternater locknut and slacken adjuster to remove both alternater water pump belts, you will need to adjust it all the way to get the belts off.

5. Slacken adjuster for power steering belt.

You might need to slacken the pivot bolts (bolts that hold them to engine)to get the alternator and power steering pump to move in towards the engine.

Refitting is reversal of removal, if you've slackened main pivot bolts make sure you retighten or they will vibrate when the engine is running.

Have fun:thumbs
