Hi guys  this may sound silly but has anyone had problems with their power steering belt coming loose after it has been replaced :?: When I did my water pump I fitted new belts, but the power steering one has come loose for the 4th time now

Hello Sweety,

Is it a case of the belt stretching or is the pump moving? The later I would not think possible with the adjuster system it has.

I think it could be the belt stretching as the pump seems solid & know have tightened all the nut as tight as I can on the pump. Is it normal for the belts to stretch so much as I just can't remember  Had to tighten the alternator one last week as that had stretched

sweetie some times you can get a belt that will stretch and stretch but if it doesn't stop check the tightening bolt on the adjuster to make sure the slider is free of grit and grease that should stop it or you could of got unlucky with a faulty belt

Sweety,
It is perfectly normal for a new belt to stretch after fitting. Having to adjust it 3 or 4 times is not so normal, it may be that you have an inferior belt, but it should settle down. You will just have to keep an eye on it and change it again for a different make if it keeps expanding.

Thanks for all the replies   I'm going to keep an eye on it & if it keeps stretching I will have to replace it

mine done exact same thing only bought the car so at first thought it was baddly adjusted. But after 5 times thought bugger it i'll buy a new 1 the one listed was a wider belt making me think maybe the thinner 1 was doing something daft like wearing down and slipping further into the grooves of the pulleys..

New ones only been on for a week but no sign of any problems so maybe something you should check. It wouldnt be first time i've known a motor factor not to have right belt so gave thinner one thinking its right length it'l do the job.

I think you've hit the belt on the head with that johnston-evo3  The new belts are a bit thiner than the old ones eg new belts 12.3mm & old belts 13.5mm wide:roll: I've replaced the p/s belt today with the old one & up till now it's been fine, so am going to fit the old alternator belt in the morning & take them back to see if they can get the right ones or give me a refund

Bought my belts from Milners, worked first time no probs, but they will need a minor tighten after they have bedded in.
