Possible turbo fault

Seeking help 94 - 2.7 TD maverick with 100,000 mile on board.
When accelerating from 2500rpm to 3500rpm turbo is noisy (bearings I think).
It feels as if its chocking up and doesn't want to rev up through the range.
Any ideas !!

pull the pipe off in the inlet manifold end and feel the turbo shaft, any play? up/down, back/forward, should be impercepable, Rick
