After getting new truck and it refusing to start or turn over more than once I had the battery tested at motor factors today and was fine 100% putting out 738 cca, I came home and checked all earths seem ok! Slid back red cover on positive battery terminal and it was only attached by 5 or 6 strands of wire, 3/4 of it wasnt attached. Removed terminal and tried 4 different factors today but none stock it and say main dealer only.
2 questions, Main dealer only? and how would you clamp the wire back in to one of these? Pic of terminal attached. Had truck 2 days and not heard it run yet ..lol

if you have large solder iron cut back the cable to clean wire and solder it on with cored flux solder, if no solder iron carefull use of gas hob small ring, wrap cable covering with wet cloth

'Tin' the clamp and cable first

I got new one easy enough. Try a tractor place, commercial motor factors that sort of thing.

hi if you grip the connector in a vice , be carefull not to straighten the clamp leaving the crimped end exposed, tap a flat screwdriver in the end where the wire has sheared, work the screwdiver around so the remaining wire comes loose, then using a pointy pliers bend the crimps back. place the cable back inbetween the crimps squeeze closed with a pliers, then remove from the vise jaws and place on top of vice and tap closed gently with a hammer. i did a repair like this as a temporary repair it lasted 3 years until i scrapped the vehicle. so much for temporary repair, i hope this can be of some use to you.

I would do that too, but if you clean the crimp and scrape the cable, you should be able to solder it using a small blow lamp, and some resin cored solder.

Don't let plank know I am suggesting solder joints, but eventhough you try to crimp the connector, it won't be as good as the original, and as said above might
last a few years, but gives you time to source one.

So crimp and solder.:thumb2

Thanks for all the replies, had it done this morning by auto electrician 2 minutes from house came out and put a heavy duty one on crimped and soldered for 10 quid!! But still wouldnt crank starter fooked he thinks says it drawing way too much current, also he tested battery and thats fine so starter looks like my first thing to do, have checked all earths bar the one in drivers wing cant see it!! So before i get new starter later can anyone give me clue as to where exactly on the wing earth is and where does it earth to? Although i didnt give a lot for this immaculate truck things are starting to add up didnt account for starter, only code 18 fuel problem but cant even get onto that until she is firing up!! Thanks for help so far..

have you had a peek in the workshop manual ?:nenau

Hi Briggie , will look now. Had a look regarding the fuel fault this truck is supposed to have but not about earth points.

Good news at last truck fired into life this afternoon after having surgery on its starter motor!! sounds great from 1500 rpm upwards but when dropping below that its searching and wont idle ultimately cutting out, i drove home from garage using left foot braking and keeping revs up. Pulled codes again tonight as cleared them all probably by accident as first time i have done it, but bit more patient tonight. Codes are as follows, 12, 15, 18, 21, 22, 34, 47.
At least a bit of light at end of tunnel. More help aprreciated.
Cheers Rich..

code are listed in the down load section

( under quick links )

12- MAF sensor circuit malfunction
15- Fuel Quantitiy adjuster/position sensor-circuit malfunction
18- same as 15
21- Fuel Injection timing solenoid/ injector needle lift sensor malfunction
22- same as 15 & 18
34- Injector needle lift sensor- incorrect signal
47- CKP sensor- incorrect signal

A lot of fuel codes, but could it just be one problem? where abouts will I find ckp sensor on 98 Terrano SE Tourer auto? Maf is Hitachi and cleaned and new air filter this evening, there is a grommit at bottom of air filter cylinder but has split / perished, will this cause incorrect air reading to MAF?
Sorry for all question guys but took a big step forward today and truck will start at least, bit excited now!!
Cheers Rich

wow what a list, far too many for common sense, I would be looking for bad earth connections, one crucial poor earth could cause most of that lot, look for the smaller signal earth wires, there are several to engine and different body points, I could never work out why so many but Nissan are not going to waste wire if it was not needed, Rick

Thanks Rick, some pointers for earths? Checked all ones I know of like starter and 2 on engine offside but couldnt see one from drivers inner wing. Had new starter fitted today so that is earthed ok, battery earths ok. Feel like im making progress at minute but not brilliant with electrics!! I have a multimeter but only tested battery current with it before. I did take a chance buying this truck with a fuel fault and not running but the previous owners had burnt out starter!
Cheers Rich..

If you get down and under you will find more thin earth wires from gear box to chassis and body, and I guess there will be more from engine management unit behind the heater controls but much more difficult to get to, Rick
