I am not sure 'popular' is the right word - but is any info available on what the common causes of MOT failure are for early TD's? My '94 160k mls. Mav runs well and seems solid but at this age its time to start paying attention to the bits that are likely to cause MOT failure. At this age it is obviously not worth spending lots of money to fix a problem, but it can be worth spending a bit more time and a lot less money to prevent (or delay) the problem in the first place.
I have had some success with this approach in the past, having taken a couple of vehicles past 200k mls.
So, any views on the weaknesses of the Mav/Terrano design which will appear in later life and can potentially lead to the scrapheap.
Cheers
Peter

The following is a list of common problems I can think of - some will fail an MOT others won't. Obviously theres all the usual consumable items like brake pads/shoes and all the various ball joints.

Rear brakes need keeping up with or auto adjusters tend to play up.

Rear axle/halfshaft oil seals.

Hydraulic clutch pipe.

Rear wheel cylinders.

Auto hubs

Rear of cills (especially on swb models)

Rear seat belt mounts inboard and out board ones.

Drop links front and rear

Anti Roll Bar bushes front and rear.

Gearboxes can be a bit weak so schedules oil changes are a minimum.

Front CV boots on vehicles used in 4x4 regularly

Power steering box leaks

Steering ilder (bush wear but replace as complete item)

Drag link (ball joint wear)

Water pumps on TD and TDi

MAF sensor

Theres probably more but thats a good start for you

Just had my mot, failed on stuck hand brake cable (near side) and rear anti roll bar drop arm ball joint.
