Poor starting and wont tick over

Hi, until now my 95 2.7 maverick has started first turn and ticked over lovely.
But this week its all gone horribly wrong, it is very difficult to start and i have to pull out the idle speed adjuster so it ticks over at 1000rpm if its any lower it will stop.
I changed the diesel filter but it made no difference. When driving it there are no issues whatsoever its just when idling and trying to start it.
Anyone have any ideas.

Could it be the mini-filter?

If it's still lumpy after it is warm, it may not be glow plugs.

Starting warm or cold its the same so can rule out glow plugs, wheres the mini filter located.
Was also wondering about the lift pump, can it be accessed easily.

The mini filter tell tail signs is that it cant rev over 2500rpm & gets worse :thumbs

Saying that it is free & easy to check & clean :thumbs

I'd be looking at air in the system as if it clears when driving the pressure is over riding the possible leek :nenau

If its the injectors it would run on idle like a petrol misfiring :thumbs

Finally is the fuel getting through ok

It is possible it is a "vapour lock" well, if you remove the fuel cap and you hear air getting in, the vent on the cap may be blocked, stopping fuel getting out. easy check.

I would be tempted to run a long pipe straight into the pump and use gravity to feed the fuel from say car roof height. Either syphon the fuel from a secured container or use a funnel and a long pipe. You'll need less than half a litre of fuel to prove it.

This will eliminate air getting in from the fuel lines, blocked main fuel filter, faulty pump, water in the fuel.

Take care doing this and watch out for fuel coming from the removed pipe.

With faults like this, it is difficult to locate them.

what you could try for air leaking is change one pipe to clear, from filter to pipe on bulk head.. youll see if theres air getting in

if you put clear pipe on inlet and outlet of filter/hand primer, you will also see if air is entering at hand pump.
