OK Toolbox, I've got it stored at a farm about 15 miles from where I live, not enough space at my joint, will be over there on Thursday so I'll get back to you then, but I think it's going to be an engine swap from the posts tonight but that won't be so bad this time around, he says hopefully...

Many thanks for everyones advice tonight, will get back with an update soon

Steve

Sorry, posts overlapped and just read your last reply

The pumps are identical and we've no wires left over either, everything had a place, the only thing we couldn't find a wire for was a spade clip about halfway down on the passenger side of the engine which we thought might be some kind of sender unit but there was one on the old engine too. This is all a bit strange

Do you want photos of the whole engine and some of the fuel pumps or just the fuel pumps or is there an easy way to tell the difference. I might be able to get over there tomorrow evening to take some.

Right, first off a BIG HUGE apology to all who have posted replies on this topic as the only boob around here is me!

Toolbox's last post got me thinking, so I went and dug the owner documents out and it turns out that it ISN'T a TDI afterall..

I have a Terrano II SLX 2.7 TD (1997)

Again, I was going off what the previous owner told me, I really must pay more attention to detail, and it was all a bit rushed when I bought it as we were going away on holiday the following day and had loads to do and paperwork was never my strong point.

So, I have fitted a TD engine into a TD system, happy days, I've got something right even if it is by default and now that leads us back to the original problem, why won't it start? And would it be easier if I started a new thread?

My sincere apologies for leading you all a merry dance so far but by talking we get the right information eventually.

Hopefully I'll get some answers before you ban me from the group

Many Thanks
Steve

Got there in the end!!

As others have said, the injector pump is not coded, nor a part of the NATS, so it should start once bled through, assuming no problems with the new engine / injector pump?? Did you witness it running in its original home?

If you are sure it is hooked up correctly and bled through, i would try a tow start (sometimes nothing is wrong just stubborn) for a short distance.

Tim.

The engine was already stripped out when I picked it up but the scrapyard said it was a runner before they took it out. I had been thinking of towing myself to see if that would do anything, will give it a go and let you know the results

Many Thanks
Steve

That’s a relief you have the right engine, that means you have the rectangular head lights? Please don’t say no. I thought it was odd that you could have fitted a TD in the place of a TDI without noticing the difference or all the wires that wouldn’t fit etc etc.

As Tim says it should start up without any bother, give it a good prime on the hand primer until it goes hard then slacken an injector pipe and turn her over with plenty of right foot until it fires, then stop and tighten pipe.
If your still having a problem check the stop solenoid on the back of the injection pump is working, put your hand on it and get some one to turn the key on and off , you should feel and hear it clicking if not then check there is voltage going to it via the wire you should have reconnected when fitting the engine.

Yep, I have rectangular headlights, the stop solenoid is the round steel one with a single wire coming out of it, I know it as a fuel switch, if so we tested that and it appears to be working ok, but will double check anyhow.

Will give it a go and let you know how I get on, hopefully tomorrow if not Friday, depends on my mates shift tomorrow if he gets an early finish we might be in business, fingers crossed

Many thanks for all your help again
Steve
