Play in steering

Hi all i took my terrano for a mot today touch wood she passed. The mechanic told me i have play in my steering which i no i do its pretty bad any worse i was told it was going to fail i notice it worse when im doing 60 mph rather than 30 mph on the advisory it says (play in steering rack inner joints) is this hard to fix and where are these inner joints? Any help would be gratefull ty all

Firstly you don't have a steering rack you have a steering box on drivers side & an idler arm the other side with a big bar going between these which is the drag link. The little ball joints on the drag link will be what's causing the play so you'll need a new drag link never had to replace one myself but from what the guy's have said on here it's not a huge job to do hardest bit is getting the ball joints on the link to pop out of their mounting points

Its called the steering relay arm.Milners 4x4 sells them.I did one of mine around 18 months ago.And as Sweety say's, hardest job is splitting the ball joints.

Ty guys for helping. Its funny you say that when the jeep is not running and i move the steering wheel from left to right theres a lot of creeking from that bar. Is there a chance it might be the track rod ends i think i have 4 of them

It could be the only way to tell is to jack the front end up & move each front wheel to see where the play is

Not long after I got my 05 plate to get new drag link, both track rods and a ns idler. All the new bits came with grease nipples to grease those ball joint things up. I was lucky had a great pair of friends on here that basically did the job for me. However that said apparently there is supposed to be some play.

I'm on to my third relay bar well when I fit it. They do cause alot of play when worn

For peace of mind I'd change trackrods,idler arm while your doing steering bar

Good point^ i changed them whilst i had my toolbox out.Also if you get the idler arm from milners, you wiil most likely have to bore out the bolt holes, to line it up.Some folk on here have used a modified steering box for the idler arm.
