Think that's pretty normal, mine's '94 and has about the same!

Sounds like you need to tighten the adjustment bolt on the steering box. It is located on the left hand side, under the battery at the bottom. You will see a bolt sticking out the top of the box that from memory has a locking nut you first loosen then make the adjustment and re tighten. but only minor adjustment as it has a big effect don't over do it.

make sure when you test/adjust that the wheels are straight ahead, very important, Rick

ok then so whilst changing all me vacuum hoses today had a quick peek at the steering, now what I can say is the pay if before the rack if this makes sense, I grabbed hold of the column half just by the fuel pump way between the dash and the rack ,I can turn the column the play and watch the steering move from outside the truck threw the windscreen.

I'm struggling to follow your jist mate but there is no rack.
If you can make the arm move with your hand there must be slop in the balls, as without the engine running it would be bloody hard to do. Unless you're Popeye :lol

the steering column between the bulk head and the steering box, I can grab hold of the column with my hand sliding in underneath the battery and turn the column with free play and watch the steering wheel turn 1" to 1" 1/2 from outside engine off.

OK and at the same time there's NO movement of the steering arm ? Dont forget there's a big reduction gear in there so you'd only expect a small arm movement for that :thumbs

OK then it does seem like you've got some slop in your box
Adjust as mentioned and then try again :thumbs
Just check the steering column UJ and it's bolts while you're there , just incase :thumb2

not really lol, just had a look I can see me adjuster under the battery tray, ive got a flat head screwdriver adjustment.

OK so after a battle, I removed the battery as made it tuns easier, I wound in loads of play in the box until success no more saggy box " whilst in there I did find the reason my power steering pump looked like it was going to fall out also ,was the 14mm nut and bolt under the pump was not done up, so not a formula one steering truck, but 99% better than she was ,thanks to all once again....

Have you been out on a drive with it and used full lock carefully ? It's just incase, as it's possible to over do the adjustment and end up jamming the steering box
