Has anybody upgraded their stock air filter setup on the 2.7tdi out of interest and if so with what and has it improved mpg or performance?

Someone did use a pond filter:doh.Others have uprated their filters.

Thats an idea and you could put a fishtank in the rear and warm the water off the rad - stops the engine cooking and its a talking point for passers by and the extra rear weight keeps the back end planted in the wet!!!!!!!!!!:thumbs

I have seen items ranging from this eblag number :151102116587 upto £90 quid odd and probably go more but they all state they improve air flow (and sound nice?).

Always worry about these kits as never dared to fit one as if you got water into them inside the engine bay it would be instant destruction surely?

Small amount of water is pasable.

Its even injected in at times to clean whn using svo.

Ive the K & N, Induction. Can hear it as to mpg, not to sure maybe 1 or 2 if than.

Thats usually done in any DI motor that runs veg to stop "ring gumming" :thumb2

Yes have fitted K&N filters to both of the T2's I've had (in airbox ones) & gained better throttle responds & mpg went up by 1-2mpg:augie if your just going to stop on road you could fit an induction kit or even make one up but adding a cold air feed would be a good idea

I fitted a K&N "in airbox" to mine, mostly because the paper ones block up very quickly with the dust on Spanish tracks, That was about two years ago, I've cleaned it twice using the K&N cleaner and oil (easy job) in that time. No noticeable increase in induction noise, possibly a slight increase in performance and I don't really log fuel consumption so that I don't know.

I fitted a K&N "cone" filter, and disposed of the airbox. You can definitively hear it, seem to hear much more turbo noise now.

Slight increase in mpg and performance, the mpg increase already went out the window because I like to hear the noise :)

I should point out that the filtering ability of these cone filters is very low compared to the original paper filter, so for the benefit of some pleasing noise and very small increase in performance, you are accelerating the wear on your engine, Rick

And if you have a naked filter in your engine bay best not meet any mud

Just look at my old thread with my airbox full of mud

Thats what has always put me off, plus surely they draw in warm air from the engine bay whereas the original has air com ing to it from the outside?

Ah, but you people take your cars in much deeper mud than me :).
The engine has been going strong for 18 years, I think the cone'll do for the few years left to drive it.

Just bear in mind spray from wheels, splashing and mud flick ect :thumbs

I know. I do still have the mudflaps in place, engine bay is surprisingly clean. I do check the filter regularly though. Didn't throw the airbox either, in case I want to go back to it.
