Passenger Footwell Water Leak

Hello Mes Ami's

Yorkie here,

I have a water leak ........... some where

The passenger footwell is the swimming pool, how does it get filled ? When I am asleep at night, or away from the car, I suspect some troll with a magic watering can, and I cant catch it, so I have to look at other things

As I said the leak I have is major and in the passenger footwell

I have checked all the usual items, windscreen coving, air vent seals, all has drawn a blank, there is the odd droplet of water in the fan, but nothing to show this is the ingres point

I am drawn to the area of the left PILLAR area, immediately to the left or behind the bonnet release pull, there is a is a void with a drain hole, but its dry, but it seems as if some how the water leak is there 'ish splashing in this area, the electrics and the foam surrounds are wet, the footwell gets saturated (as though there is a diverter pointing it into the footwell)

I have dried the cab footwell and feel confident that the area is narrowed down, but I would like some of you experts out there to give me a little of you advice and experience

Hi Gerald and welcome aboard. Well not sure how old your truck is but the old tin worm gets in and rots out the wheel arch bulk head area just where the inner wing joins it.

Also open the door and look through behind the hinges, theres a cavity behind the plastic wheel arch liner that fills with mud and causes two problems. Water over flows and gets in to the car in that area but also blocks the sun roof drain which in turn backs up and comes in from above. This happens at both sides too. Simple solution is to hose it all out job done:thumbs

Speaking of the sun roof drains, the plastic tube pops off behind the roof lining.

And finally, on the outside of the car! The black plastic trim where the wipers poke through below the windscreen. Remove this and you'll see a metal plate, this needs removing and resealing as it lets water in to the heater and then in to the footwell.

Another finally but you should be able to rule out pretty easily, the heater matrix can leak but you should be able to detect the anti freeze.

There plenty to go at:thumb2 but I would say start with hosing the cavity out behind the door hinges. Then check the metal plate and also have a poke around the wheel arch to check it's solid.

When my footwell carpet was getting wet the water was getting under the plastic trim between the tail door and floor and running along the channel where the wiring goes under the floor straight to the footwell. Mines a van though with rubber matting on the floor, thats why I never noticed it but if your boot carpets damp it might be worth a look. Plenty of Tiger Seal cured it.

Ive just noticed a wet boot carpet, wheres the leak normaly?

It's normally either the thin strip on the edge of the apperture at the top, needs glueing down with Tiger Seal or something. The other culprit is the actual seal that goes around the tailgate it's self. I fed some cable through on the inside of this seal as it is hollow and this helps fill it out a bit but be carefull because it's very soft rubber and can easily be ripped. I also removed the kick strip on the edge of the carpet and basically filled it with silicone sealer and refitted it.

I've not had a drop of water in the boot since doing these fixes.

Mine is sodden too, but the boot and under the rear seats is also wet. I have a tube of tiger-seal and a day off tomorrow, so that plastic trim area at the back is getting it!

Also, what's the best way to dry my carpet out? It's a tad annoying when it's freezing out to spend longer de-icing the inside than the outside...

However, here is the run down

I think all the support and items are good and I will address each one, I look at the sunroof channels (even tho I aint got a sun roof), the boot seals, the window seal - but i think the culprit is

the crack

the crack on the bulkhead / wheel arch

i'll try and clean it out, i'll try and seal it from both sides

i'll try and get some tiger seal to do all the bits and pieces

Very much appreciated you petrol headed terrano guru's

But the smell of a sweaty pongo still exists; tho should be sweet smelling like a lady from Diamond Lils of GUZZ soon

I dried mine out by leaving it on the drive with the carpet lifted in the boot area and a fan heater running. Did the trick in a bout a day and better than leaving it as that may encourage the old tin worm.

Gerald, if you've got a crack in the bulk head wheel arch area then don't seal it get it fixed. It's an MOT fail but also it's a serious safety issue. My self and a member from here fixed mine up but it was an interesting job!!! I was on fire duty and it needed it too. Worth it though as mines nice and solid now and nice dry carpets too.

Had water getting in my N/S Footwell traced it And it was running down the window through the black trim in-between the bonnet and windscreen So i removed the wipers Then removed the black plastic panel And then when i looked inside there was a a small panel with 4 screws through it Its the access point to the the heater motor Found the seal had gone round the plate So resealed it all dry dry dry :thumbs

Water Leak Update

Hello Mes Ami's

Heres an update

I found three leaks, passenger side boot door; rear passenger drivers wheel arch (inside), front passenger footwell

All leaks channel themselves together, forming pools under the rear passenger seats and then over spills into the rear passenger door wells and flows front and back in the channel where the electrics run

SO

I have removed 1 rubber BUNG from the floor pan in the front passenger well and 2 rubber BUNGs from under the rear seat, so to allow the water to exit (so I cant wade through 4 foot of water now - not that I would anyway)

At the boot door (hinge side) I have created a DAM with sealant (guttering sealant) to seal the internal trim of door and internal covings, this is on the side where the door hinge is

I have taken the passenger mudflap off, cleaned out a cavity that was full of mud, leaves etc and it was possible that this was a point of ingress

I checked the air intake plate, it is sealed quite well, even though I did espy one or two droplets in the fan housing and what looked like damp - but i have to dismiss that as a leak at the mo because the seal was good and no evidence of water runs or ingress

As to the fix, it is ongoing, I will now have to wait and see what happens for road noise, wetness or anything else, all i need to do is dry out the carpets now

As I have now stripped the car, can i remember how to put it back together, how many bits and screws will I have spare - non i hope coz my name aint MFI

i must seal my rear door frame at bottom, looks like comes down inside of back door
and depending on how level or not car is creeps in.

noted that few inches in on top seal theres a damp patch too so wondering if some comes
into car down inside of car as well. perhaps need to sit in car whilst someone sprays
hose on car?

have odd drip from switch of sun roof, looked and felt behind trim whilst moisture there
wouldnt say is soaking. wonder if moisture already in car tried to evaporate in sunroof
then drips back down. sunroof drains looked ok and not much if any water around
sunroof opeining/frame though havent pushed water down drains. could do with a dry
day to sort.

It only took a week longer than I thought, but I sealed the rear of the Terrano, under the black strip and under the trim either side with pretty much a full tube of tiger-seal - which, by the way, is horrible to work with. It sticks to anything and everything and refuses to be wiped/washed off. I have some on my hand that the nail brush didn't get rid off, neither has alcohol or acetone.
I've also made sure there is no mud or debris inside the passenger wing and mostly dried my carpet out. Here's hoping for a little rain to see if tat stops my leak, or not.

could be the heater matrix too, & seal down the windscreen as mine was leaking cos it'd been replaced but not properly (my poor wee truck's been negected again)
